Let’s talk about markup on furniture. I’ve heard every version of “but why are you charging me for design AND making money on the furniture?”

Here’s the thing: procurement isn’t just placing an order and waiting for it to show up. It’s managing relationships with dozens of vendors, tracking production timelines, coordinating white-glove delivery, handling damage claims, storing pieces until installation day, and somehow making sure your dining chairs arrive the same week as your table (a small miracle, honestly).

Design is creative. Procurement is logistics. They’re completely different skill sets that require completely different types of work.

Running a sustainable business means being compensated fairly for the work you do - all of it. And our clients sleep better at night knowing someone is managing every detail of getting thier beautiful space put together properly.

16 Years in 16 Seconds: Designing-as-you-go is the guaranteed way to make huge and costly mistakes on your construction project. Meetings about design elements should take place long before demo starts or the slab is poured. I understand that it might feel like things aren’t progressing fast enough by taking time in the beginning to fully design. But you’ll stop and start so much by designing on the fly that the project will actually take longer (and that’s why you see so many exhausted people mid-build or renovation, wishing they’d never started in the first place), cost more, and you’ll probably end up making some concessions you’ll live to regret later. Front load your timeline by getting your ducks in a row and planning carefully, THEN start construction once EVERYTHING is selected (in our firm, that means everything - down to the rugs and pilows). You’ll protect your peace, and your contractor will thank you! by @rclinteriors

I had to make the decision yesterday to take Jack’s pain away and make it my own. He hadn’t eaten all weekend, and I could see him slowly fading. I made the day as peaceful and beautiful as I could. I gave him some pain medication in the morning, then put him in my bed, on my robe and played healing frequencies for cats on YouTube all day to help him rest. I left one small lamp on a very dim setting and pulled the curtains.

He didn’t move much, only shifting positions occasionally throughout the day. I stayed next to him all day, petting him and whispering how much I love him and what he means to me.

Around 5pm, I gathered him up and walked him around the yard one last time. He smelled the grass and enjoyed the breeze on his face, but did not try to leave my arms. I brought him back in after a little while and got him settled in bed. He didn’t resist, and lay back down without hesitation.

I chose an at-home peaceful passing, and it was the right decision in every way. He was in his favorite spot, and we got to take as much time with him as we needed. Flowers were one of his most favorite things, so I made sure to send him off surrounded by them. Thank you to my sweet friend who made it her mission to bring them to me so I didn’t have to leave him. The procedure was so peaceful. He took his last breath right around sunset.

Today has been hard, and my heart will hurt for a long time. I feel so grateful that I got to be his mom and that we had such a strong bond of love between us. He was my beautiful boy, and I will love him forever. by @rclinteriors

Clock in for art history class! Today’s lesson is a glimpse into one of my hyperfixations: the Georgians, the concept of “good taste,” and why there’s a moral implication to “timeless” rooms.

While I finished my degree in Interior Design, I decided to also minor in Art History with a concentration in the Decorative Arts. While it’s hard to say I have a favorite historical aesthetic, I’ve always found the Georgians to be particularly fascinating. It was a world at odds: the class system that had been in place for centuries was beginning to shift, and many insecure aristocrats and nobles looked for ways to insulate themselves from a growing middle class. I certainly couldn’t cover an entire stylistic period in under three minutes, but these are my thoughts on how we are still influenced by the Georgian idea of taste today.

Our clients are shocked at how little they actually see us. Why? The work - team meetings, fabric pulls, site visits, sourcing appointments, drafting, specifications, etc. - takes place when they aren’t looking. No meetings that could have been emails for us! Their time is too valuable for that.
