Richie Assaly (@rdassaly) spoke with the minds behind Polo Lewis (@iampololewis ) about making weird pop music in Toronto, the strange magic of performing on the street during lockdown, and how they turn the frustrations of being a young independent artist into something bright, propulsive and genuinely fun.

Their debut EP, 'Who Is Polo Lewis?' is out today. by @rdassaly

Danielle Smith blames immigrants for Alberta’s economic woes, and polling suggests that most residents agree with her.

Now, the province wants to enact policies that will treat newcomers as second-class citizens.

With just a few weeks until the referendum, it’s time to ring the alarm bells. Link to this story in my bio, or DM me for a non-paywalled version. by @rdassaly

You’ve almost certainly heard of Angine de Poitrine by now. Though they’ve been around for years, the anonymous duo exploded in popularity following the release of ‘Vol. II,’ an experimental, math rock album that arrived in April.

Completely instrumental, the songs on this project are dizzyingly intricate, each made up of shifting tempos and labyrinthine guitar riffs, and yet they burrow into your subconscious with the same intensity as a top 40 pop song. The band’s virtuosity is only enhanced by their bizarre imagery: the creepy, papier-mâché heads, the polka-dot outfits, the double-neck guitar/bass.

Unfortunately, guitarist and bassist Khn de Poitrine and drummer Klek de Poitrine weren’t available for an interview, not only because they are on tour, but also because they are 333-year-old aliens who don’t speak any human languages.

Instead, @rdassaly chatted with Sébastien Collin, who has been Angine de Poitrine’s manager since 2024.

As our planet heats up, urban flooding is becoming more frequent and more severe. Are Canadian cities doing enough to prepare for the epic storms to come?

“There’s always a bigger storm,” one expert warned me. “And we cannot out build the sky.”

My first piece in @thewalrus is an unfortunately timely one. Link in bio! by @rdassaly

To kick things off, we spoke to Lance Sampson, who records as @aquakultre, about his ambitious concept album ‘1783.’

The $30,000 @polarismusicprize, which is based on artistic merit alone, will be awarded at Massey Hall on Sept. 22.

This is one of my favourite projects and I challenged myself in more ways than one - including not being “family friendly” lol. If you haven’t listened yet, give her a spin - @uneedvivica loves the attention!!! 😈💿
