As wildfire season continues across many parts of North America, we’re sharing a look at some of the controlled burn testing behind our research.

Wildfire exposure can vary significantly based on vegetation, neighboring buildings, topography, and available fuels, even across a single site.

Testing allows us to observe how materials, assemblies, and enclosure details respond to fire exposure, including where vulnerabilities can emerge.

New podcast episode is live—and this conversation ended up going places we weren’t expecting.

Matt and James from RDH Building Science talk through what happens when building science gets involved before construction problems show up—not after.

There’s discussion around moisture, enclosures, climate-specific decisions, wildfire testing, and the idea that better outcomes usually start with better planning.

Thanks to @huberwood for sponsoring today’s episode. by @rdhbuildingscience

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Beyond the symbolism of the day, reconciliation asks us to think about relationships: how they have been shaped by colonial systems, what responsibilities we hold within them, and what it means to put those relationships back into balance. It also means making space for Indigenous knowledge, law, and ways of understanding our relationships with one another and the land.
This year, our teams are wearing pins featuring artwork by Indigenous artists. Their designs offer ways to think about what this day represents.

We’ve also pulled together a list of books and important conversations:
• Five Little Indians by Michelle Good
A novel following five people after their release from residential school and the different ways that experience follows them into adulthood.
• 7 Generations: A Plains Cree Saga by David A. Robertson and Scott B. Henderson
A graphic novel spanning seven generations of one Plains Cree family, including the effects of colonialism and residential schools across generations.
• This Place: 150 Years Retold
An anthology of graphic stories by Indigenous writers and artists that revisits 150 years of Canadian history through Indigenous perspectives.
• Talking Treaties, Indigenous Governance & Land Relations with Dr. Deborah McGregor // RAIR
• Why Reconciliation Must Move at the Speed of Trust: A Conversation with Len Pierre // Behaviour Speak with Ben Reiman
• # 389 Matricia Bauer // Shaun Newman Podcast
We're also supporting organizations leading this work, including RAVEN, UNYA, and Seed2Stem. RDH is making a financial contribution to Seed2Stem - find the donation link in our bio. by @rdhbuildingscience

Rappelling for a cause!

We were proud to sponsor this year’s @deficanderel Challenge, where three RDH’ers rappelled down 401 West Georgia to raise funds for cancer research.

Thanks to everyone who donated, cheered, and helped make the day a success.

A closer look at the renewed AIA Headquarters in Washington, DC.

RDH provided facade engineering for the renovation, including the solar (PV) shading array seen here catching the afternoon sun. The fully electric, net-zero retrofit transforms AIA’s 1973 headquarters while retaining and reimagining the existing structure.

RDH Oakland’s Principal Felix Weber captured these views during a recent visit, as work on the surrounding courtyard and landscape continues.

Congratulations to EHDD, Hartman-Cox Architects, Turner Construction Company, and the rest of the project team.

Task 2 of the Energy Standards Report is here!

This groundbreaking report from The Passive House Network and RDH Building Science compares Passive House standards to baseline codes, and the results are clear: Passive House produces materially lower energy use for multifamily buildings in climate zones 1-7.

See the research for yourself. Download the full report now with the link in our bio, and join us tomorrow, September 9th at 2PM ET for a free presentation with report author Marine Sanchez and PHN Policy Director Bronwyn Barry. All are welcome!

A new view of Vancouver’s skyline is here.

Oakridge Park is a visionary redevelopment for urban living, transforming a former shopping mall into a new mixed-use community where homes, retail, workplaces, civic and cultural spaces, and a 3.6-hectare public park come together.
Developed by Westbank and designed by Henriquez Partners Architects, the project pairs ambitious architecture with complex technical demands. Our Building Enclosure Consulting team has helped bring that vision to life, contributing technical expertise across the development, from a curved curtain wall and large skylights to below-grade assemblies and the critical interfaces between enclosure systems.

That involvement continued in the field through review and performance testing, connecting design intent with technical performance as the project took shape.

We’re proud to see this milestone come to life for our project partners. It’s the kind of ambitious, technically-forward work we thrive on.
