Ten months. Ten women. A frankly questionable number of hours. 😅

On October 10, Babae officially leaves my studio and goes out into the world.

These paintings began as conversations with Filipina women about identity, home, and one question:

If you were a goddess, what kind of goddess would you be?

Their answers became part of the work.

Nothing terrifying here. Just deliberately ruining hours of careful work.

Every layer gets precious. Then the next one comes along and destroys it.

Details disappear. Things get buried. Destruction is inevitable.

The trick is trusting that something better survives the wreckage.

BABAE: Meditations on the Divine brings together two artists, two generations, and two distinct perspectives.

Mixed-media artist Reva Diana looks outward, drawing from conversations with ten Filipinas about life, divinity, and being Filipina in Canada.

Her daughter, photographer Ava Diana, turns inward to create an intimate reflection of her own experience.

Together, their work explores identity, inheritance, womanhood, and the ways we encounter the divine within ourselves and one another.

Join us at cSPACE Marda Loop for the art reception in the Level 2 Hallway Gallery at 5:30PM.

A supporting free workshop led by Dr. May Farrales will take place October 10, from 2–5 PM, in the RGO Treehouse. All are welcome.

More details to come.

The pastel drawings are done. Now comes the fun part—destruction!

The oil layer is about adding colour, but it’s also about obscuring, breaking apart, and abstracting what I spent so much time carefully drawing.

Here are three close-up snapshots from three completed oil layers. Once the oil is dry, I’ll move into egg tempera, pulling some of those lost details back to the surface.

Build it up. Break it down. Build it again.

Thanks to @qvarantine.events for helping me with letting go of the fear. But this layer is still definitely gut wrenching.

The pastel layer of the 10th and final panel is complete!

There is something a little insane about experimenting with a new process while also creating work for an exhibition. But what’s the fun if you don’t take a few risks?

Ten drawings down. Now, we paint.

The series opens October 10 at cSPACE. Hope to see you there!

The pastel layer of the last of my Vancouver goddesses is complete—at least, the last for now.

I’ve enjoyed creating these portraits so much that I already know I want to continue the series beyond this first group. There are so many more stories, experiences, and goddesses I want to explore.

So this is the last Vancouver goddess of this first batch, but definitely not the last Vancouver goddess. On now to the last of my Calgary goddesses

Another pastel layer complete.

One thing I’ve loved about this series is how each goddess has pushed me to draw something I’ve never drawn before. After years of mostly drawing the human figure, it was so much fun figuring out how to draw this wolf.

Every portrait teaches me something new.

The pastel layer of my mother’s portrait is complete.

Working with PanPastel feels closer to painting than drawing—thinking in shapes, edges, and soft marks rather than lines. It’s a space to explore mark making before moving into oils.

As I worked, I kept returning to my mother’s hands, full of history. They brought back quiet memories of care, guidance, and love, and I wanted to give them the same attention they’ve always given me.

Another pastel layer complete.

I’ve really been enjoying this stage of mapping out the form through light and shadow. Right now, the work is still very structural—observing, measuring, and building a foundation for everything that comes next.

But I can’t wait to start the painting layers.

That’s where the real fun begins for me. I can start breaking away from simply copying what I see and move toward painting how it feels. Letting colour, marks, and materials respond to the mood of the portrait rather than being completely tied to the reference.
