Decided to do some #PassengerPrincessReading today and started The Fastest Way to Fall by Denise Williams @nicwillwrites

Love it so far! I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately and I’m really enjoying Britta and Wes so far. She is relatable and funny. He’s snarky and an unexpected feminist king with a broken heart. I can’t wait to see these two collide 💘🥰

On this Juneteenth, I want to talk about a book that affected me, made me think and changed the way I viewed stories: 🤎 Kindred by Octavia E. Butler 🤎

It’s not a Romance, but to me it’s a profoundly moving story about self-love, resilience, and humanity.

I first came across this book in my 20s. It was one of the first books I read featuring an adult Black FMC and I went in blind, not knowing much about the story and it caught me totally off-guard: the time travel, the brutal plantation setting, the fact that she somehow seemed to be tied to this boy (Rufus) who through the passage of years transformed from just a rich brat to a cruel, racist slavemaster, who - despite knowing and "loving" the protagonist (Dana) - sought to imprison and hurt her.

What surprised me about the story even more is the layered, nuanced way in which Butler dealt with Dana's relationship not just with Rufus, but also her mother, her husband, and herself. It would've been so easy for Dana to just plain hate Rufus and everyone else at the plantation, but she doesn't. She is only human and her first introduction to him was as a little boy that she rescued and she carries that with her throughout their interactions and tries to improve him and the world around her.

Dana is honestly one of the best characters and FMCs I've ever read, hands down. And of course, the time travel mystery and the family connection between Rufus and Dana and trying to figure out how it all fits together, while being on the edge of your seat at the horror of the seemingly unpredictable bouts of time travels into an unsafe environment... This book was just a masterpiece and I am better for having read it.

I first read about FMC Orietta in the Princess of the Mafia prologue and I was immediately drawn to her black sheep, caustic energy and her off the charts chemistry with Luigi. I think there’s a little bit (or a lot!) of Orietta in all of us — the feeling of being unwanted, of low self esteem, of not feeling good enough… she is a wounded bird 🦢 who bites you before you can crush her and I just wanted to wrap her up and give her a hug. Lucky for me, Luigi does just that! He is such a walking green flag 💚 and I LOVED how obsessed and in love with her he was. He is so so good at taking care of her 😍. I loved their love story and was so honoured to have received this ARC from @sophia_raz_author to review.

Come for the spicy age gap story that happens *after* they’re married… and stay for the realistic, broken black sheep FMC, who finally works through her trauma, a super supportive MMC and a soul healing reconciliation with her mom that definitely made me cry 🥺💛 This novella packed a surprising amount of angst, spice and family drama in such a short package. Such a pleasant surprise 💕 definitely the best way to close out this month!

And for my #ADHDgirlies — I read 80% of this in ONE SITTING! And iykyk that’s hard for us. This is a quick, enjoyable read. Trust.
