‼️SPOILER ALERT ‼️

“Sometimes forgetting is a mercy, and recalling is a pain too deep to bear.”

🎧 The Mad Wife - Megan Church

8️⃣/10 - The first half of the book seemed a little slow, but the plot twist had me a little messed up to be honest. Gave me goosebumps to just be read in the perspective some type of altered reality and then to imagine some people have to actually wake up to that reality. It’s sad and honestly a taboo topic right now. Proceed with caution on this one because it’s not the kind of trigger warning I was expecting at the beginning!

📚The Great Wherever - Shannon Sanders

5️⃣/10 - I loved the concept of this book. I’m very curious about farm land & real estate generally plus family dynamics - but I feel like it was a slow & I was so lost with the differing perspectives. I also wasn’t able to read through this as quickly as others so that could have contributed, so take my review with a grain of salt!

“But justice is never the sole goal: conquering injustice with your soul intact is the goal.”

“There is nothing more unchristian than despair because ours is a faith that says even when things are dead, God can bring them back to life.”

📚”What Hath Justice to do with Righteousness?: Reclaiming the Intersection of Protest and Prayer” - @charliedates

🔟/10 - I’m going to be honest - I’ve never gotten goosebumps more while reading a book. We have listened to Dr. Dates preach a few times at @paocommunity_ and he can preach the socks off a sermon, so I’m thankful for his insight, wisdom and encouragement in the medium of these pages. Get your dictionary ready, because you’ll need it, but oh man I walk away from this feeling convicted and hopeful. He provides support for how justice and righteousness are inseparable concepts and how the body of Christ should let that play out in the social realm, while contrasting two prominent Christian leaders in Rev. Dr. MLK Jr. and Billy Graham.

‼️SPOILER ALRERT ‼️

“You can’t control anyone else’s choices, but you start with what you’re given and then you make your own.”

🎧 The Bright Years - Sarah Damoff

6️⃣/10 - Sad but beautiful story of addiction, generational trauma, forgiveness and hope. Loved the ending perspective from her dad at his end of life. I didn’t realize how much animosity I still had toward him until it switch to his shoes. A good reminder we’re all doing the best we’ve been given and it isn’t always equal. ❤️

“Love is the simplest thing. Relationships are the hard part.”

📚 Our Perfect Storm - Carly Fortune

4️⃣/10 - I’m really disappointed by this one. One Golden Summer was so good. Main character was oblivious, which I’m learning I don’t love AT ALL. 😂 Pretty blah romance IMO. Worth noting, I don’t love romance novels so take that for what it’s worth.

“Shir zan. A woman with the courage of a lion.”

📚 The Lion Women of Tehran - Marjan Kamali

7️⃣/10 - A historical fiction that follows two friends and theirs differing journeys in Iran. This is the second historical fiction I’ve finished this year like this and I kind of like this concept! I feel like as 90s baby’s, we lived ignorantly through so much of the early/middle Iran conflict that this just open my eyes to the transition of power and *regression* of women’s rights that occurred. Super interesting!

“When a lamb strays, it’s usually lost to wolves. Vulnerable without its flock. But sometimes, just sometimes, if it’s lucky, it finds a new one.”

📚 Lost Lambs - @madelinecash

7️⃣/10 - I’m intrigued by any sort of dysfunctional family trope and this was top tier dysfunction. 😂 So jaw dropping and funny at times haha. A quick read too!

“The cat was amused at these two idiot humans, talking about how unfair death is, when it’s one of the few things everyone gets. Death is a magnificent invention, the cat knew, because it’s the impermanence of life that makes it beautiful.“

🎧 The Road To Tender Hearts - @annie_hartnett

7️⃣/10 - Such a sweet story. Funny. Meaningful. Deep. I just love a good PJ character. Not sure why he can’t take care of himself, but just speaks truth through the whole book. 😅 This was okay on audio! Feel like I could have used a physical copy to annotate lots in this one!

“Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives.”

📚 The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

8️⃣/10 - I think psychology is so interesting. Now, this is way more in-depth than anyone outside of clinicians needs to know, but the way he makes it approachable and readable is awesome. A lot of “aha” moments. This book is over 10 years old so I’m interested to hear any updated research on EMDR and neurofeedback - even for things outside of trauma-related mental illnesses. I hope he writes another soon, or at least an updated version. 😋 Super interesting!

“This slapped-together band of misfits made me feel, for the first time, that I truly belonged. How the hell, I wondered, did I ever get so lucky?”

🎧 The Calamity Club - @kathrynstockettauthor

🔟/10 - I don’t normally do this, but I think you should listen to the audiobook over reading this. Whoever does Meg’s voice and Flossy’s voice 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 Could listen to them all day! I love when you “close” a book and the title and cover just make sense now. Like “Ahhh yes….The calamity club.” Also, love the little tid bits of history in here. Always keeps me engaged and feeling like it was worth the read.

“What if alzheimer’s isn’t just a slow death? What if it’s another dimension entirely? An ascension, even. We humans are so fixated on our minds that we see their loss as a tragedy, but what if it’s a gift? Maybe the erosion of memory clears space for something truer. Maybe the intelect gets in the way of the heart, until little by little it doesn’t. How freeing, I think.”

📚 Before I Forget - Tory Henwood Hoen

4️⃣.5/10 - While I can appreciate the sentiment of reframing what Alzheimer’s can be, for some reason what she did gives me the ick I can’t get over. Not sure I loved the relationship aspects in the book other than father-daughter one.

📚 Summer’s Never Over - @darbyboze

6️⃣/10 - Not the best book to read before sending my elder daughter off to her first camp in a few weeks, but thankfully all the thrills were geared toward the adults in this book. 😅 A good cabin read!
