Happy Publication Day @jamesislington_author !! The Strength of the Few - sequel to The Will of the Many - is officially loose 🥳

I have waited ~two years for this book and my dreams came true when James flew up to Brisbane to join Avid Reader bookstore for a midnight release! Thank you @avidreader for organising and @text_publishing for making it happen! Text Publishing also posted me an advanced copy, so I could talk to James about it when I met him 💞

They say you should never meet your idols… I say unless it’s James Islington. He is so genuinely delighted, respectful and engaged with every fan who comes to meet him.

Swipe 👉🏻 to see his accomplished author cackle as I retell how a chapter had me closing the book and staring at the wall for a solid 15 minutes.

Thank you James for giving us everything I have been seeking in literature. Hope, courage, inspiration. See you for book 3.

QOTD: Where are you up to on your Hierarchy Series journey? Or what book is your Roman Empire?

EDIT:
Oh no! The music cut off the video audio. I will post it to my story and pin to TWOTM highlight.

Sunday Shelfie

This little space is slowly coming to life.

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind appears to tip over the bookshelf. The books will tumble to the floor and be crushed. You only have time to save one row of books.

QOTD: Which shelf row do you pick?

If this question feels like torture, please direct your concerns to its creator, @libraryswede 😂

Frances White’s books hold a special place in my heart. Her debut novel Voyage of the Damned was my first buddy read on booksta two years ago and the humour and whole heartedness bonded us so strongly that it became our primary friendship group to this day.

Her writing holds heavy themes, yet with such hope, care and warmth, and this book was no different. The story has the aura of a fairytale, but with dark and horrifying trauma twists. It is much, much darker than Voyage of the Damned.

As usual, Frances’s plot is plotting and her characters provide soft cushioning. I appreciated the trigger warnings on the first page and consideration for readers.

Special thanks to @franceswhiteauthor for gifting me The Bone Door ARC so our Swarm could come full circle and read this book together again.

QOTD: What are you grateful for today?

AOTD: Today I am grateful it stopped raining after two weeks so I could finally do a sunlight booksta photoshoot ☀️

Mistborn trilogy.

For those who haven’t read it yet, this series is the gateway drug to the Brandy Sandy universe.

It’s time to dive back in with book 2. Wish me luck.

QOTD: If your current read became your reality tomorrow, how safe are you?

AOTD: I’ve got plenty of metal lying around I can swallow, I should be good 😂

Set in a children’s orphanage, Cerulean Sea is a beautiful contradiction. It has such levity and playfulness in writing, that the profound depth of plot sneaks up until it has you both laughing and crying (in a good way). Each of the characters are unique and slightly disconcerting, yet heart wrenchingly wholesome. By the time you realise they’ve wormed their way into your heart, it’s too late.

This is a sweet and wholesome story about overcoming mental blocks, healing, found family, and inclusivity. The audio narration does a great job of delving into each character and setting the scene.

It did feel a little slow to build up and hook me. I persevered for the books reputation, and it was well worth the read. It felt like a warm blanket and a hopeful hug.

QOTD: Do you prefer plot or character driven books?

Project Hail Mary has hit mainstream cinema!

Book to movie adaptions are so risky. LOTR and Game of Thrones are the minority that live up to the story.

PHM is a 5 star book for me - second favourite behind the Will of the Many. Please believe me when I say my expectations were HIGH.

And I’m shook that I loved it. They nailed the humour. The graphics were stunning. Ryan Gosling is * chef’s kiss * 🤌🏻

I rate the movie 9/10. It lost one point because they gutted the story of all the beautiful science that Andy Weir consulted with world experts to accurately portray.

Other than that, I loved it. As Rocky says: amaze, amaze, amaze! * jazz hands *

Swipe 👉🏻 for cat tax. Happy Caturday! It’s Mr. Jackson’s 17th birthday today 🥰

My favourite author and his publishing company sent me a little advanced gift… Thank you endlessly @text_publishing! You have a fan for life 😭🫶🏻

Just in case anybody has somehow avoided my extended raves about this series, this is the highly anticipated sequel to the Will of the Many - the Strength of the Few - being released on November 11!

I cannot wait to see @jamesislington_author again at the midnight release in BRISBANE in T minus 10 days!!! You can tell he loves his fans 💝

Happy Halloween! 👻

QOTD: What are your predictions or questions you want answered in the sequel?

Warning ⚠️ TWOTM spoilers ahead.

PREDICTIONS:
1. Vis wants the Aurora Columnae destroyed and only the Princeps knows all the locations. He will hunt them both down.
2. Also Suusicus while he’s at it.
3. Also the people who hurt the person! You know who.
4. Fadricke and Menendez going to assemble his army.
5. We will see Estevan in the other place. Possibly the King as well.
6. Ulnais will deliver on the debt owed.

My spooky read this year is the Bonesmith duology. I bought the first book for the cover and spent half a year searching for the second in Australia (albeit, lazily). Then for my birthday the lovely @kendallshelfmade surprised me with the matching Ghostsmith sequel…. Swipe left 👉🏻 Isn’t it gorgeous 🤩

The best thing about booksta is the friends you meet and I am so grateful to have connected with so many fun and caring people who let me rave about the Will of the Many unchecked 😆

QOTD: Who is your favourite villain character?!

AOTD: Does transitioning Anakin count? Otherwise Buddy from the Incredibles 😂

REVIEW 🌟🌟🌟💫

🌿 Sherlock and Watson-esque murder mystery
🌿 Fantasy world and magical abilities
🌿 Sci-fi graft enhancements
🌿 Neurodivergent representation
🌿 Swipe left for synopsis 👉🏻

This book comes with the perfect English detective vibes and banter. The writing is high caliber, I can see why people recommended it to me after my adoration of the Will of the Many. The MMC had a similar logic based approach to things, which I appreciated.

While I did enjoy this book, I have begun to realise that I am quite picky about murder mysteries. The structure to finding clues can feel a little tedious, but is inherent to murder mysteries in general, not specifically this book.

I would have loved to see more of the magic world. I had so many questions and theories about the titans that I didn’t have the opportunity to resolve. I also felt the MMC to be rather detached, which was intentional for the neurodivergence, but I have connected with other neurodivergent characters like Murderbot. This book would have been a 5 star for me if I felt more invested in the characters, and the world of the titans tied in to the main story.

QOTD: What is your favourite mystery? Or neurodivergent character?

Happy Map Monday!

It’s actually early Tuesday morning here in Australia, but I fell asleep last night 😂

This map is the world from the Licanius trilogy by my favourite author - you guessed it - James Islington. I am making my way through this series and enjoying seeing James’s portfolio and growth as a writer!

QOTD: Which world or map would you enter if your books were a portal?

All Systems Red: Book #1 of Murderbot Diaries

🖥️ Project Hail Mary meets Deadpool
🖥️ Snarky clone-robot cyborg weapon thing
🖥️ Well built futuristic world
🖥️ Science vs ethics
🖥️ Short novella
🖥️ Swipe for synopsis 👉🏻

My first 5 star read of 2025! (Assuming rereads of the Will of the Many don’t count)

This book slams you straight into a unique and interesting sci-fi world with a cyborg protagonist called Murderbot, raised as a robotic weapon who hacks its programming to reject government orders. Murderbot just wants to watch TV, but has to run around saving idiotic humans from themselves.

There is a self depreciating humorous tone in the writing. Imagine trying to navigate social scenarios when you’ve not even been raised as a human *sweats*

I adored Murderbot and was genuinely upset for a few days when I finished. Then booksta informed me there was a series… hold my beer! (Well… water)

The audiobook is only three hours long and narrator Kevin R Free captures this hybrid’s tone to perfection. I digitally borrowed it on the Libby app. Audible also gives you the first book for free if you have a subscription.

QOTD: What is your favourite sci-fi read? Or what other space / tech / IT booksta decor am I missing?
