I held a solo celebration of life ceremony for my daughter on the mountains, soaking up the warmth of the sun and listening to the birds chirp
.
I decided that grief never ends, but it changes. It’s a passage not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love.

We all grieve differently. I tried, to the best of my fragile self, to participate in some of my regular activities , especially seeking healing in nature. But it also meant solitude, a calm quietness: being in my own space without wanting to mix or mingle. I was a caterpillar that transformed into a cocoon and stayed for a long time. But, as it so happened, one day, I looked up, just like that and said, “God, I think I am ready to spread my wings.”
.
That is when I recognized that I received a Godwink, a seemingly coincidental message from a higher power that gave me hope, guidance and reassurance that everything was going to be as it should be, like a stranger saying exactly what you needed to hear or finding a solution just as you needed it. It could be a timely encounter with someone who wants to help you. Or it could be a positive outcome after a a period of struggle. I recognized it. God winked. Opening the door to my solitude seemed safe. How will you know?

Be actively looking for signs in the ordinary. Recognize the extraordinary in everyday. Life. And trust that God uses people and circumstances as messengers. In essence, a Godwink is that moment when a coincidence feels like divine intervention…and then you become a butterfly.

Walking down memory lane. I am 6 years old, in dance class with Ms. Pat. I so wish I could tell her how much joy she has added to my life. All these years later, I still remember to “use my arms” and “move with the music.” I had no idea when I was 6 that Ms. Pat would be such a powerful influence for the rest of my life. I am still dancing!

They say “Dance like nobody’s watch.” I disagree!! Dance like everyone is watching because there is someone watching who wants so much to just let loose and you are the inspiration that sets their feet in motion. No choreography! No restraints! No judgment! Just a whole lot of fun!!! Your music! Your vibe! Your smiling face! Your story! Movement is medicine so let’s go!!

A story: In the gym, I dance between my sets. A personal trainer who saw me dance between my bicep sets told me not to do that. He said I should sit and think about my next set. Hmmmm. I told him dancing is the activity -3 sets. I just do bicep curls to stop and think. 😂😂

Back day is very important. We need a strong back to be able to lift people up if they are going through a difficult time.

There’s the 77yo woman who has cerebral palsy but works out every day. There’s the man whose son was murdered last year but always smiles. There’s a man who has a brain injury but kicks ass every day…and loves my dancing. There’s a woman who had her heart broken but challenges herself..and is looking powerful! There’s the immigrant couple that is ignored by others…and I get great recipes from them. There is the man with one arm who powers through his workouts. There is the 93yo man who works out with his 67yo daughter and all I can say is WOW! And there is me, navigating through life with grief after my daughter passed away. I talk to all of them. We share a common goal….working out will help the healing process. We lift each other up. That is why we have our back days!
.
And tomorrow will be shoulder day…because you never know when someone will need a strong shoulder to lean on.

That feeling when you realize hiking season has arrived!

It is the “ordinary” that I crave. The simple life, the unpretentious, the quiet times, the treks up the mountains. Nature is a force that is inexplicable. A bunny hopping by, a cactus in bloom, a boulder to hug, the arrival of a glorious sunrise, the trees whispering in the wind, the birds fluttering by, the timing for a blazing sunset. It can be the breathtaking Yosemite or the heart-pounding Grand Canyon or meandering the simple Marcus Landslide. To experience these is to experience the “ordinary”… and that is extraordinary! 💙
