Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory

There’s a public library in Rancho Mirage with its own research-grade telescope. Not a metaphor — an actual observatory, attached to the library, free to use.

The Rancho Mirage Public Library moved into its current 40,000 square foot home back in 2006, right on Highway 111. Its most surprising feature didn’t show up until over a decade later. In March 2018, the library opened its own observatory, funded by a state education grant, that houses a research-grade PlaneWave telescope under a 22 1/2 foot dome.

You don’t need a membership or a reservation to use it. Free “OPENights” run every Thursday and Saturday evening, with daytime tours Tuesday through Thursday. If stargazing from home sounds better, the library runs its own Telescope Program, roughly 30 telescopes available for checkout, just like a book.

It’s not just an observatory, either. The library has hosted the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival every year since 2014, alongside a year-round Writers Series and its own Book Nook bookstore.

It’s a small thing, but it says a lot: this is a city that invests in things most cities wouldn’t think to build. That’s part of what makes Rancho Mirage a place to live, not just visit.

Palm Springs’ story isn’t just mid-century architecture and postcard sunsets. It’s the people and institutions who showed up when it mattered most.

@dap_health has been a lifeline since 1984, born out of the AIDS crisis and now delivering whole-person care across the Valley — nearly 25 clinic locations, regardless of identity or ability to pay.

@thecentercv has spent nearly three decades fighting isolation and building a sense of belonging from behavioral health care to a community food bank to youth programs.

Two different organizations. One shared commitment to this community — and to each other. The Center has called DAP Health an ally in navigating today’s funding landscape, and that kind of partnership is exactly what makes Palm Springs feel like Palm Springs.

Grateful for the work they do, every day. 🧡

Check out their socials for ticketing info for their upcoming gala fundraisers!

There’s a golf course in Rancho Mirage that might have invented the golf cart, might have inspired a Ford sports car, and definitely became one of the desert’s most prestigious addresses. Meet Thunderbird.

Back in 1951, amateur golf champion Johnny Dawson took an old dude ranch and turned it into Thunderbird Country Club — the Coachella Valley’s very first 18-hole golf course. He didn’t do it alone: early investors and members included Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Leonard Firestone, and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. It became a fast favorite, and the club lore grew right along with it — the golf cart is rumored to have been invented there, and Ford is said to have named its new Thunderbird sports car after the club. Neither claim is fully documented, but both have stuck around for a reason.

What is documented: President Gerald Ford and First Lady Betty Ford built a home right on the club grounds after he left the White House in 1977, and Ford lived there until his death in 2006. The course itself has hosted the Ryder Cup and the Palm Springs Golf Classic, the tournament that eventually became today’s American Express Desert Classic.

The club’s prestige didn’t stay contained to the fairway. It gave rise to Thunderbird Heights, a gated, 600-plus-acre residential community that grew up around the course and became one of the Valley’s most sought-after addresses.

Decades later, it’s still one of the architecturally richest pockets of Rancho Mirage — architect Javier Segura has made a specialty of restoring its mid-century homes.

Curious what’s available in Thunderbird Heights right now? Send us a message.

SUNNYLANDS

Just up the road from some of our favorite Rancho Mirage listings sits one of the most consequential estates in America — and most people driving past have no idea.

Meet Sunnylands

Built in 1966 for publishing magnate Walter Annenberg and his wife Leonore, this 25,000-square-foot, pink-roofed retreat sits on 200 acres of Rancho Mirage desert, nine of them shaped into show-stopping gardens. Architect A. Quincy Jones designed it as a private world unto itself — the Annenbergs called it “a place of peace.” History just kept showing up anyway.

Eight U.S. presidents have walked those halls, starting with Eisenhower in 1966. Nixon drafted part of a State of the Union address there in 1974. Reagan made it his New Year’s tradition for years. In 2013, Obama and China’s President Xi Jinping held their now-famous “shirtsleeves summit” on the grounds — no ties, no formalities, just two world leaders talking under the palms. It’s earned the nickname “Camp David of the West” for good reason.

It’s not all politics, either. Frank Sinatra married Barbara Marx there in 1976. The Annenbergs’ Impressionist collection — Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso among it — eventually went to the Met. There’s a 30-foot totem pole on the property, and a magnolia tree grown from a cutting of Andrew Jackson’s own White House magnolia, gifted by Nixon in 1972.

Since March 2012, anyone can tour the house and gardens themselves — proof that in Rancho Mirage, even the quietest-looking estates carry the loudest stories.

This is the neighborhood we get to sell in.

The Story of Little Tuscany: Built on Purpose

In 1934, builder Alvah Hicks stood at the base of Mt. San Jacinto — on a stretch of hillside so steep and rock-strewn most developers wouldn’t touch it — and decided that was exactly the point. Every architect who came after him treated the terrain the same way: not an obstacle, but the whole design brief.

That’s how you end up with a swimming pool that runs straight into the living room (Albert Frey, for industrial designer Raymond Loewy). A house cantilevered dramatically off the hillside (E. Stewart Williams). One of the most photographed homes in America sitting right at its edge (Neutra’s Kaufmann House).

It’s how the neighborhood built up a guest list nobody advertises. Jack Benny and Mary Livingston owned the 1951 post-and-beam at 424 W. Vista Chino in the ‘60s, built originally for the May family of department-store fame. Magda and Zsa Zsa Gabor each called 1090 W. Cielo Drive home at different points across more than 30 years — because apparently once was enough for the rest of us, but not for the Gabors.

Up on Panorama Road sits a house the Hearst family nicknamed “San Simeonita,” a nod to Hearst Castle itself — George and Rosalie Hearst filled it with pieces from the family collection in 1964, and in 1977 their niece Patty Hearst spent time there while out on bail.

None of it happened by accident. The same steep, boulder-strewn hillside that scared off most 1930s developers is exactly why the people who did build here had to actually mean it — and why, ninety years later, it’s still one of the only neighborhoods in Palm Springs where the architecture had to earn its place. That’s worth something no manicured lot can offer. Little Tuscany. Built on purpose.

Curious as to what’s on the hillside right now?
