As a Pinterest girlie, I LIVE for these reminders. Whenever I open the app, these little pins just pop up, and somehow, I never forget them.

If I’m not smiling, it’s a clock-it moment for me. Love them!!

Ps: I’m doing my dumps in bits. This is part 1. 😊 by @readby_jeifa

Yesterday, I checked off one thing from my bucket list. šŸ„¹ā¤ļø

I finally met Hayet Rida!

I’ve been a fan girl since my university days, so you can imagine how starstruck I was finally meeting someone I’ve admired for years. šŸ˜‚ I honestly couldn’t even say much to her. I just stood there, smiled, and admired her. My brain had completely left the building. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

It was such a surreal little moment, just being there in the room with someone I’ve followed and admired for so long.

PS: she really has no smell!!! 🤩

Today’s book feels like a warm cup of tea (or matcha)

Matcha on Mondays is the second book in the Marble Café series, and it has that same gentle, Japanese ā€œhealing fictionā€ feel. The Marble Café is normally closed on Mondays, but on those days, it becomes a little matcha café where different people come in carrying their own problems. Over 12 months, we follow several people: a heartbroken singer, a couple having relationship issues, an artist who has lost her purpose, a young woman struggling with family expectations, and others. Their stories gradually overlap through the café and the small connections they make.

I loved how comforting this book was. Nothing huge or dramatic happens, but the stories reminded me that sometimes we don’t need someone to fix our problems; we just need a little kindness, a different perspective, or a reminder that we’re not alone.

These are the kind of books that always get me out of a reading slump: gentle, cozy and hopeful.

ā€œMemories can be like pins anchoring the continuous stream of time. But because each person positions their pin in unique spots, their alignment often ends up slightly off.ā€œ

What’s your ultimate reading slump cure?

On today’s episode of books that aren’t action-packed, but will stay with you… She escaped her home, but surviving the outside world came with its own kind of cruelty.

The novel follows a 17-year-old girl living in Seoul in 2008. Her home life is awful. Her father is an alcoholic who is physically abusive, particularly toward her mother, and the girl becomes increasingly resentful of her mother for not leaving him. Eventually, she runs away from home and ends up living in a boarding house with women who are just trying to survive in 2008 Seoul, in the middle of a financial crisis.

The book explores womanhood, poverty, loneliness, economic hardship, the different ways women learn to survive and the complicated relationship between the narrator and Juju. It’s not a book with a lot of action, but more about watching these women exist and try to make something out of difficult circumstances. It’s bleak and uncomfortable at times, but also beautifully written and deeply human. I’m glad I listened/read this.

However, whiles listening to the audiobook, it was easy to zone out if you’re doing something whiles listening so I’d advice you give it your maximum attention or listen whiles reading the book to get the most out of it.

ā€œTheir tenderness sickened me. Why couldn’t I just be happy for them? Happy that tenderness existed all? Why couldn’t I look it in the eye?ā€

Have you read Tailbone yet?

Books I’m reading this week:

When I Sing, Mountains Dance by Irene Solá
I’m loving this one for its magic realism, told through a chorus of voices (even the storms and the mountain get a say).

What are you reading this week?

One leg on Earth by Pemi Aguda
This one? the dread is doing exactly what it should!! And I can’t stop reading it. I started it months ago but stopped because I had other things going on. So this time, i’m going all in. by @readby_jeifa

Soooo, I’ve added a bunch to my TBR and my TBR is not TBR-ing anymore. It’s becoming a whole library.

These are some of the audiobooks I’m currently eyeing, and I honestly don’t know which one I’ll start with first.

Which one would you pick for me to listen to first?

Thank you @librofm for these. I get to listen to so many wonderful books, travel to different countries and worlds through stories, discover new authors, and support independent bookstores while doing what I already loveā¤ļø by @readby_jeifa

August Wrap up!

Every Choice But Us — Adesuwa O’man Nwokedi
A family drama filled with complicated relationships, rivalry and expectations. Fola’s relationship with her sister Dolly makes this especially messy. It’s a juicy and frustrating read.

The House on Mango Street — Sandra Cisneros
A beautiful, quiet story about growing up, identity and finding your place. I loved how much it says with so few words. I liked how it was written as well.

Matcha on Monday — Michiko Aoyama
A gentle, comforting book about people finding connection and little moments of healing. It feels like sitting down with a warm cup of tea after a long day. This is soft, wholesome and cozy.

Aya: Life in Yop City — Marguerite Abouet & Clément Oubrerie
A fun, vibrant glimpse into everyday life in 1970s CoĢ‚te d’Ivoire. The characters, gossip and family drama make it incredibly entertaining. I loved the African setting and energy. The drama? Love it.

Married to the Mob 1 & 2 — Mz. Lady P
Messy, dramatic and absolutely addictive. British gets pulled into the dangerous world of the Demonte family, and the romance comes with plenty of chaos. Pure guilty-pleasure reading. Definitely a ā€œjust one more chapterā€ book.
