What's the oldest book you've read in the last year?

Friends! I completed my reading challenge! 41 books, one from each year from 1986 to 2026.

I started this challenge after viewing my StoryGraph years graph and realizing how heavily I read recently published books. There were a few outliers and when I looked at them I noticed they brought me joy. So I decided to try to read older books and as I was turning forty this year I thought it would be fun to reach back into my own past and read something published during my lifetime. I was also spurred on because I was sick of the possibility that the books I was reading could be Aı sľop and I knew the older books would be free of that! So that's why I invented this challenge for myself.

Things I found that I didn't expect- um, you know all the stuff from the 90s/00s regarding some "files"? Yeah, I think we should look at some of the publishers and authors from that time period too, because that's where my DNF books came from because of that specific topic- why was that so prevalent in books at that time? My only conclusion is there was some associations...just something to ponder on.

Writing and books that got popular at different times definitely have a pace to them that differs from other decades pacing. The 80s/90s books are slower and more floral in their language and descriptions versus the fast direct 2020s books. Yes, there are fast and slow books always, but from my sampling this was my observation.

If I was doing it again I would search genres within the years versus just what was published as a whole, as some of the years I struggled finding one I wanted to read from the top ~100 in popularity.

So what's next? I started a whole new bookish challenge last week and I'll be posting about it soon. But I also am going to continue this challenge in a softer way, I am going to read one book per decade per month in this coming year. I'll be doing 1900 to 1970, so I'll have a few break months to lessen the pressure and I'll have greater flexibility in finding books I really want to read.

Thanks for reading this far and for your questions and support of this challenge and me!

Happy mid-year 2026! I hope everyone's goals and challenges are progressing well!

The only challenge I have running is reading a book from every year I've been alive- I've got 6 left! I don't think I'll finish it before my year Bookstaversary, but it'll get done sometime in the next few months. I thought the 90s were hard but the 2000s carry much of the same mindset that the 90s had and I've DNF'ed a lot of books this past few months that were my challenge picks.

I've added a few bits of data to this round of graphs, and I'm sure I'll add more before the end of the year 🤭

I’m simple really, just a girl who loves too many things and had difficulty narrowing down to 10. So here’s a nibble of who I am:

1) Favorite Book Series - Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward. Z & V are the book loves of my life

2) Animals: I’ve had cows, dogs, cats, rabbits, fish, cavies, and hamsters. The longest I’ve gone without a pet is 18 months after my dogs passed, and then I got Fig, the rabbit you see in photos now.

3) Art: I’m fairly certain I’ve been drawing since I could hold a crayon. While I use many media, pen & ink is my favorite.

4) I’ve been to 48 states and 7 countries (aside from my own).

5/6) I adore movies and television. I didn’t have a TV as a child and a few times as an adult.

7/8) I worked in coffee for 7 years and love the routine of making coffee every morning probably more than actually drinking it.

9/10) I mentally cannot have silence while driving so if it’s not an audiobook it’s gotta be music, even if I’m only going a block (ask my sister she’s made fun of me for that).

All of these are books I've read in the last year, and normally I would say the book is better- it is gives us time to fully explore a world (inner or outer) and let's us sink into the characters and their actions, but here are 5 that I thought the movie or show was better, and only one that I thought the book was.

Dept Q/The Keeper of Lost Causes: a bit too slow in book form for me, and Matthew Goodes character was more likable in the show than the book.

Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society: I have a long history of avoiding this book - right back to like 2011/2012, and I'm glad I did or I never would've given the movie a shot- and I LOVE the movie and Dawsey- he's big fictional boyfriend material. But the book lost a lot of the interactions with them that felt warm, and the last 20% added some weird unnecessary bits about an old historical famous person- totally not needed (and wasn't in the movie I'm sure for that reason).

Timeline: Love Crichton but sometimes he over explains and makes things take longer than needed- plus, hot cast 😍 the book is still good, but I liked the movie more.

Slow Horses: Honestly, equally good. Until season 6 they kept very close to the books so I don't feel like I missed anything watching the show, and instead got nice visuals and a great story combined. Love them both!

The Help: Don't at me- definitely some white saviorism and I think it shows through more in the book. I liked the inner world of characters more in the book, but liked the movie better overall.

The Firm: I asked when I started - how do you make a 17 hour audiobook into a 2 hour movie? Well, make them jump place to place in the middle for no actual reason. Just watch the movie.

P.S. I Love You: these actually are almost two separate stories with a thread of similarity. Holly is rather unlikable in the movie to me, but she is so human and perfectly amazing in the book. If you like the movie or hate it- do read the book, it really is a lovely story of grief and growing after you lose your person. Fantastic soundtrack though!

Go into your void travels well fed. No eating while reading, even on page one 😂 I learned my lesson last year trying to eat dinner and start The Mean Ones by Tatiana Schlote-Bonne.

I got my preorder of What Feeds Below by @thebuffwriter thank you so much for the beautiful art and sticker! This and The Mean Ones are two of my favorite book covers.

Beautiful packing job and thank you for the bookmark @prairielightsbooks

Here's to the third He begin County Library Passport I've influenced! When I said I wasn't an influencer- I lied 😉 but fr, If I were to influence anything I feel like this is a morally good thing for it to be, I'm honored 😍

@gadgetgirlbooks and I had some other plans for this year and I am so grateful to her for adjusting them with me due to my energy levels- it's been a hugely busy summer and I was too tapped to do the day trip we'd talked about.

Instead we headed to the Rogers, Minnesota library, the furthest NorthWest in the county. It's a lovely branch, the renovation is modern and inviting with tall bookshelves but a light and airy feel.

Normally I try to hit a park or restaurant within walking distance, but we drove a bit further NW to check out Enzo's Wonderland- a book, plant, and game shop in Monticello. It was absolutely cozy and well designed. We spoke with the staff and found out they are expanding to be able to host events and author talks in the future- a definite must visit! by @reader.bea

Did you know rabbits can wag their tails? This wasn't her strongest wag but it is the best one I caught, she was very big into wagging this morning as she played with her rope toy the circling game she created.

What's the cutest thing your pet does? (Pet photo tax welcomed)

Stop 2/41: The Augsburg Library in Richfield, Minnesota and its connected Augsburg Park.

This library has really cool architecture- the curved arches and wood paneling give it a very comforting artistic feel inside. Outside the park is gorgeous and contains a beautiful grove of Burr Oaks. With the windows of the library overlooking the grove and the arched wood ceilings I feel a bit like a North American Hobbit while inside.

Although the meeting room is relatively small they host a great number of events- put on by the library itself and private entities- and I've enjoyed all that I've attended.

While I was there two teen boys with their mother saw my passport get stamped- they inquired the Librarian about it and were inspired to get their own!

QOTD: Have you attended events at your libraries? Whats the best you've been to?

Honesty moment- that aî flag a monthish ago has thrown me off my game. I used my own pictures in canva but used background remover, and now I really want nothing to do with canva or somewhat posting my micro reviews on Booksta. It's completely my demand avoidance and justice sensitivity rearing their ugly heads, and the timing hitting as I ended my last Book Challenge didn't help with my momentum either. I know most of us have been unjustly flagged at this point, I know I'm not alone in my annoyance and frustration, but I wanted to update you all with why I've sucked at posting recently. I am working on it, and I have gone to a library every week and taken photos and videos to share for my current book challenge, but I haven't shared them yet 🫠 .

So today I'm at least trying to break out of my posting slump and share what I read in July & August- any of them you want to talk about? I'm not sure I'll get to micro-reviews of them.

Love you all! Thanks for bearing with me! I promise I'll work through my brain and come out the other side soon 😍 taken in The Pit Of Despair. by @reader.bea

About last night... 🤫

I lost my Rocky Horror Picture Show V*rg*n*t¥, and I highly recommend one do so, and definitely participate- however, I'd also recommend having seen the film before watching it at a midnight shadow cast show- I did not, and had so much more to take in than if I had watched the film before. But it was a wonderful experience and I will do it again sometime.

I'm a history nerd so here are the deets: yesterday was the 51st Anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show premiere, @theparkwaympls first opened in 1931, and @transvestite_soup_rhps has been performing since 1996! That's a lot of history and I loved every moment of researching my V*rg*n Excursion.

Of course I brought my book to read because I am perpetually early and I have 3 choices- talk to people (introvert no), doomscroll, or read- and on this page we know reading will always be the choice 📚

QOTD: Have you gone to a midnight showing of RHPS? If not, would you? by @reader.bea
