Apparently my reading preference is having no reading preference 😂 We like chaos here.

What’s the most chaotic combination of genres you read?

I went to the bookshop and came across this book about womanhood, bodies, fertility, and societal expectations regarding all of those themes, and basically figured that this is just what I need in my life right now.

Has anyone else read Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami? Or a different book by her?

This is what I’m currently reading. I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I am, but it’s quite excellent 👌 Hester Prynne is quite a tragic heroine, but a heroine indeed. She has sinned, and society has cast her out as a result. Even so, she does what she can to find meaning in her life. These are, of course, subject matters that are still relevant in our day and age.

With all the attention The Odyssey is getting right now, I became curious about Emily Wilson’s translation of the epic, as well as her translation of The Iliad. I’m very excited to read these 😊

Recovering from panic disorder is hard, so I thought I would share some recent glimmers that gave me joy, and made me feel hopeful for the future ✨

1. Currently reading The Odyssey, because as someone doing a PhD to do with Greek myth retellings (that of Medusa specifically), I can’t believe I haven’t read this yet.

2. A painting by Dutch painter Mondriaan at the Van Abbemuseum. Reminded me of how I studied him (and other Dutch artists) during my Dutch Literature and Culture research master.

3. Really loved this installation at the Van Abbemuseum. I’m also still so proud I actually drove there (and back) in my own car. If someone had asked me a year ago if I thought I would ever drive again, I would’ve said “no”. Look where I am now!

4. I took a really big step last week and went on a small excursion by train. Back in February, when I started getting panic attacks again, the first one happened while I was on the train, and I’ve been unable to travel by train since. I only went on a 5 minute journey this time, and then went on a hike, but to me, this was huge progress.

5. Another picture from that same hike.

6. This was near the end of that hike. Climbing this bridge was a bit of a pain, but the view was worth it!

7. My cat being a silly boy.

8. I went climbing again. What you don’t see here is that I drove there via the motorway, accidentally took the wrong exit on my way there, but didn’t panic, and solved the situation safely. A few months ago, something like that would’ve sent me down a panic spiral.

9. My cat is still a very silly boy.

10. I am somehow managing to keep this plant alive. Dunno how, but I’m grateful. by @readergrrrl

I finished Madame Bovary earlier this week and am seriously contemplating picking this one up 👀

I kinda forgot how much I enjoy reading classics and the literary genre in general, so I wanna try and read those a bit more 😊

A recent book purchase. With the current heatwave going on in most of Europe, including my own country, I’ve been spending most of my time inside. So I’ve got a lot more free time for reading than usual 📖✨😅

It’s way too hot out here, but at least there’s books. What’s the weather like where you’re at?

I’ve mostly been watching a lot of American Horror Story lately, but I picked up Bat Eater, by Kylie Lee Baker on Sunday. I didn’t expect it to be this good, but now I’m hooked! 😱

This is a horror novel that takes place during the pandemic and it explores the racism Asian people were faced with during that time. It’s incredibly well-written and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good horror novel and/or books that feature social commentary.

QOTD: What are you currently reading?

I started reading the very last book in the Bridgerton series a little while ago. I’m gonna be sad to finish this series, but I’m also excited to find out how Gregory’s love story will unfold 😊

I’ve also picked up a new knitting project. I’m making myself a honeycomb cowl, so naturally, I had to make it with this lovely ochre yellow wool 🐝 Hopefully it’ll turn out as nice as I want it to ✨

I picked this up for my Kindle today. It looks super intriguing so I’m happy to dive in soon 👀

Have you read anything by Banana Yoshimoto?
