To be honest, I was very close to leaving it midway, it became overwhelming, and in today's world, the type of things happening around us, things we see on the news and hear, it gives me chills.

The lines between fiction and reality were a little blurred and I had to remind myself IT'S JUST FICTION, many times.

BUTTERFLY GARDEN by Dot Hutchison is one of those novels which remind you why psychological horror can be much more disturbing than monsters ever are.

I was so curious about it, everyone kept telling me it's an amazing thriller (I need to talk to your therapist), my curiosity turned into something deeply disturbing.

The character building was AMAZING, so was the storytelling.

It's the kind of thriller that crawled under my skin, I hate it. 4 ⭐

Do you have such a list of writers? I would love to know!

I might come up with a second list, because these aren't all hehe. My TBR is everlasting because I keep on reading major 5 stars.

I believe the movie is supposed to be a taste enhancer, something that expands the way the book made you feel or the perspective.

Exit 8 - An unnamed man finds himself trapped inside a nightmarishly looping underground subway corridor. Unsettling and the art of storytelling through different POVs.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind - 13-year-old boy is forced to drop out of school because his family cannot afford the fees during a severe famine. He sneaks into his school's library, teaches himself basic electronics, and constructs an improvised wind turbine from scrap parts to power an electric water pump, ultimately saving his entire village from starvation.

Sharp Objects - Troubled reporter Camille Preaker returns to her Missouri hometown to investigate two gruesome child murders. While confronting deep family trauma, she uncovers dark secrets tying her dangerously close to the victims.

Not every Russian classic has to feel like homework. 😭

Sometimes, the translation changes how easily you connect with the story. This is just my experience with these two editions, but I hope it helps you pick the one that suits how you like to read.

And yes, you can enjoy The Master and Margarita without being an expert in Russian literature.

Literary fiction starter pack?

 1) Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford - Fifteen-year-old Jeff wakes up in a psychiatric ward on New Year's Day after a suicide attempt.

2) Foster by Claire Keegan - Follows a young, unnamed girl who is sent away from her impoverished, overcrowded household to live with distant relatives, the childless Kinsellas.

3) Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell - It follows Cather "Cath" Avery, an introverted college freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who struggles with severe social anxiety and the harsh realities of growing up.

4) Fruit Fly by Josh Silver - Named a "must-read book of 2026" by the BBC and heavily compared to R.F. Kuang’s Yellowface.

5) Radio Silence by Alice Oseman - The story explores the crippling weight of academic pressure, internet fandom culture, and the profound beauty of platonic soulmates. (IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I WANNA BE FRIENDS 🥹)

I read this almost two years ago and I still think about it, which says a lot. 'Eyes Are the Best Part' follows Ji-won, a Korean American girl who becomes obsessed with the eyes of the men who objectify her, and decides she wants to eat them.

What I loved was how Monika Kim takes the male gaze, racism, fetishisation of Asian women, beauty standards and internalised misogyny and turns all of it into horror. As an Indian girl, that feeling of being watched, judged and constantly told how a woman should look and behave felt uncomfortably familiar.

Ji-won is messy, obsessive and sometimes awful, but that made her way more interesting to me.

I have my criticisms, I don’t think this is a perfect book, and I can absolutely understand why some people might not connect with it. The pacing gets uneven, Ji-won can be an incredibly frustrating character, and some parts of the body horror go so far that they can feel excessive rather than effective, but @monikakimauthor has officially reached the “I don’t even need the blurb, just give me the book” stage for me. 😭

It's from my 30min, 2am rant, I had a lot to say about Nestenska, but maybe another time.

I can't stop thinking of the Dreamer as a parasite (not exactly in any evil way, but in the most human way possible)

Before Nestenska, he barely has a life outside his own head. He wanders, watches people, imagines stories, and gives buildings personalities. He has this huge inner world and almost nothing is happening in the actual one.

Then because of her, and she sort of emotionally employed him to think, feel, BE in the real world. Her heartbreak became his daily activity.

She gives him access to a life and he consumes it VERY quickly.

And that's what I found so fascinating about White Nights. Everyone wants to dissect the romance, who hurt whom, whether Nestenska was unfair etc etc.

Meanwhile, this question keeps haunting me.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE BECOMES YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF MOVEMENT?

These stories are a glimpse into the unique relationship between people and their belongings from the perspective of talking everyday objects.

As Miko helps her clients sort through clothing, books, photographs, and forgotten keepsakes, each item unlocks memories, relationships, and king-buried feelings.

It has that very specific Japanese healing fiction quality of quietly making you think about your own life without ever feeling like it's lecturing you.

I WANT TO BE MIKO and have a little Hako by my side.

I read one chapter a night, went to bed smiling, and then even reorganized my bookshelf and selected a few books to giveaway. As someone who makes content around books and genuinely enjoys reading them, I am VERY guilty of hoarding books 'just because' they're books.

Chatty Rooms, is very quirky, thoughtful, warm and somehow gets you to think about your own life's mess.

And omg love the illustrations!

Thank you @netgalley and @andrewsmcmeel for the ARC.

Through this book, we follow Jeff's mandatory 45-day stay in the clinic as he moves from complete denial to self-acceptance.
Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford is packed with sarcasm, dark humor and raw honesty.
Humor is used brilliantly as both a coping mechanism for trauma and a barrier against healing.
I loved how the other characters weren't there to just push the story forward, they had their own essence, issues and stories.
The relationships he formed and the family he already had, were of interesting dynamic.
If you enjoyed The Perks of Being a Wallflower, this book has a similar impact.

There’s something genuinely chilling about reading something Manto wrote decades ago and then seeing today’s headlines placed right beside it, because suddenly, the distance between 1947 and now doesn’t feel that big.

While reading A Believer’s Version, I kept thinking about how easily the pieces can fall into place in completely different times and still lead to something eerily similar: desire, obsession, betrayal, manipulation, a husband in the way, and eventually a murder.

But the story did something else to me too.

I went into it with a very straightforward belief: killing someone is unequivocally wrong. There’s nothing to debate there.

What Manto made me look at, though, was everything that can happen inside a person before they reach that point.

The obsession. The entitlement. The rationalising. The gradual shifting of responsibility. The way someone can keep telling themselves I had no choice until they no longer have to see themselves as the person who chose to do it.

And I think that’s what disturbed me more than the murder itself.

Understanding the psychology doesn’t justify the act. It makes the human mind more frightening.

Maybe that’s why seeing those present-day news headlines next to Abdul and Rukma felt so unsettling.

Different time. Different people.
And yet, how familiar can the chain of human behaviour become?
