Plant Lady 🪴 by Minyoung Kang translated by Shanna Tan

4/5 🪴

I went into this blind and I’m glad I did. What a badass female protagonist 👌🏼

Explores deep frustration with systemic misogyny and domestic violence.

Synopsis: In the heart of a quiet town, a young woman tends to her plant shop, but beneath the surface of her lush, green sanctuary lies something far darker. Tucked away in the corner of a neighborhood in Dosan, South Korea, is the Plant Shop. Shop owner Yoohee has started anew, and her meticulously grown foliage thrives under her tender care.
To both her customers and herself, Plant Shop is a refuge, where petunias and marigolds bloom and the air itself is like an elixir of peace. By day, Yoohee dispenses advice on gardening, but she also finds herself offering a special service off the clock. Women who are at their wits’ end come to her about a man they hope might disappear from their lives. Pulling extra hours is taxing, but Yoohee has encountered-and dealt with-these kind of men in her own life, men who treated her (and her beloved plants) with utter disrespect. So as night falls, Yoohee trades her apron for a shovel and a hoe and disappears into her moonlit garden. There, she buries not just the remains of the day, but also the bloody remnants of a few unfortunate encounters.
As men begin to disappear...will anyone ever suspect the Plant Lady? A highly acclaimed novel from South Korea, Plant Lady brings atmospheric tension and delicate humor to a story of obsession and misogyny that will keep you rooted right to its simmering last page.’

The School for Good Mothers by @jessamine.chan

4/5 ⭐️

I really enjoyed this dystopian novel, it was hard hitting, being a mother to a young girl it hit home. I was putting myself in Frida’s position, and I felt all her emotions.
There was a lot of hard hitting elements in the school and how the book handled misogyny and how unfairly mothers are treated.

‘In this taut and explosive debut novel, one lapse in judgement lands a young mother in a government reform program where custody of her child hangs in the balance. Frida Liu is struggling. She doesn’t have a career worthy of her Chinese immigrant parents’ sacrifices.
What’s worse is she can’t persuade her husband, Gust, to give up his wellness-obsessed younger mistress. Only with their angelic daughter Harriet does Frida finally feel she’s attained the perfection expected of her. Harriet may be all she has, but she’s just enough. Until Frida has a horrible day. The state has its eyes on mothers like Frida - ones who check their phones while their kids are on the playground; who let their children walk home alone; in other words, mothers who only have one lapse of judgement. Now, a host of government officials will determine if Frida is a candidate for a Big Brother-like institution that measures the success or failure of a mother’s devotion. Faced with the possibility of losing Harriet, Frida must prove that she can live up to the standards set for mothers — that she can learn to be good.
This propulsive, witty page-turner explores the perils of “perfect” upper-middle-class parenting, the violence enacted upon women by the state and each other, and the boundless love a mother has for her daughter.’

A Dangerous Collaboration by Deanna Raybourn

4.5/5

A Veronica Speedwell mystery, this is the 4th book in the series and one of my favourites. The first half of the book was a little slower paced but the second half was great and it picked up pace and more things happened.

Immediately had to buy the 5th book, if you’ve read this one you’ll know exactly why 🥵

Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead @shipstead

4.5/5 ✈️

Loved this novel, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I heard some mixed reviews but I dove straight in and just went on the ride 📖

Summary: ‘Great Circle tells the unforgettable story of a daredevil female aviator determined to chart her own course in life, at any cost. After being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. There-after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes-Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight. At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe by flying over the North and South Poles. A century later, Hadley Baxter is cast to play Marian in a film that centers on Marian’s disappearance in Antarctica. Vibrant, canny, disgusted with the claustrophobia of Hollywood, Hadley is eager to redefine herself after a romantic film franchise has imprisoned her in the grip of cult celebrity.
Her immersion into the character of Marian unfolds, thrillingly, alongside Marian’s own story, as the two women’s fates-and their hunger for self-determination in vastly different geographies and times—collide.
Epic and emotional, meticulously researched and gloriously told, Great Circle is a monumental work of art, and a tremendous leap forward for the prodigiously gifted Maggie Shipstead.’

Babel by @kuangrf

4.5/5 ⭐️

I loved this fantasy, dark academia novel! I enjoyed this more than YellowFace and felt immersed in this new world.
I felt like I didn’t know what way the story was going to go in and it kept my attention the full time, well over 500 pages worth. 📕

Summary: ‘Babel by R. F. Kuang is a dark academia fantasy set in an alternate 1830s Oxford. It follows Robin Swift, a Chinese orphan brought to Britain to study at the Royal Institute of Translation. As Robin masters “silver-working”—a magic system where translation fuels the British Empire’s imperialism—he must choose between his allegiance to the institution and a revolutionary society aiming to destroy it.’ by @reading_with_miranda
