Apparently, I still have a bookstagram.

July felt like a pretty good reason to bring it back. 12 books, an unreasonable number of five star reads. Some chaotic women and the discovery that I do like audio books, I just needed to change the pace.

The Guest was the standout. A Good Person completely surprised me, and I tackled a book from my TBR!

I picked this up Friday night and every chance I got I returned to it over the weekend. As a secondary teacher these are the gems I spend my spare time hoping to find, and then put into the hands of as many readers as possible. This is YA at its best! It was superbly written, dystopian with an element of horror. It was clever - it made you think, and I’m still thinking now. You know it’s good when the first thing you do is google to see what else the author has written. Blown away that this is a debut novel. Can’t wait to see what Zach Hines writes next.

Last September, I stopped reading for fun. I read for work, I helped others learn to read, to find the perfect book, I talked endlessly about books at work, but I had stopped really reading.
These school holidays when I finally started to unwind, I turned to the book I most wanted to finish but never had. I’ve finished it now and whilst at times I thought I couldn’t wait to see the end of this tomb, I now miss it and wish it could of gone on forever.....or at least a little longer. Whilst I fully acknowledge the very problematic issues this book comes with, it is also brilliant, confusing, challenging and quite wonderful. At times I felt like I lived in another universe and wished for someone to talk to about this world I didn’t want to leave. There are passages in this book I will never forget, and side stories that put entire novels to shame. I don’t know if there will ever be a book that pushes me or challenges me like this again but I certainly hope there is.

This was an extraordinary read. It follows mother (Della) and daughter (Jasmine) on a literary tour of the UK. But what the author does is uses this tour and the classics to propel both the narrative but also to highlight the impact, and the cost of colonial invasion and a Eurocentric culture. It celebrates the classics whilst also highlighting the underbelly of Australia and the racism that runs deep.

It’s a book about valuing voices, the connecting with culture and recording of stories. For me it went straight on my school book list. There isn’t a reader over 14 I wouldn’t hand this to. I would want every student not only exposed to the classics but for them to be able to engage with them from this different perspective would be so refreshing. For anybody to see how we should continue to challenge literature but to also use it in order to see our own history was incredibly powerful way for me as someone who had read all those writers to have a different lens to return to them with. As someone who has lived in community I also think it did a magnificent job of showing a different version of family. That what looks like the way things “should” be done, isn’t always the lived experience, and that sometimes what looks “perfect” is simply a facade hiding horrors.

Sometimes students ask me “why do we study English”, “why do we have to read”, this book feels like the perfect answer

I spend my work days getting students to read ALL the books. Lockdown has meant more time reading with my own. I think that half the problems with literacy in secondary could be overcome if we could just keep kids reading. Not at easy task, I certainly don’t have all the answers, but if there was ever a question that could be answered by throwing books at it....well it wouldn’t hurt
Also whoever came up with the initial idea to revamp the Babysitters Club into a graphic novel is a genius.

Spending my Sunday finishing off the Red Queen series after a break. I loved Book 1 but I think I might love this final instalment even more. Now I am keen to get my hands on a copy on Victoria Aveyard’s Realm Breaker

I am so incredibly lucky to spend my days working with young adults. It also means I get an excuse to read all the books looking for the novels that will hook my students in. Particularly those who might think reading is boring. This book is a hook and a half. Horror YA style, it’s fast paced, fun, a tad gory and even though you find out rather early who the killer is, it works.
