Tutoring and reading intervention are not the same thing... And for a child who is struggling to read, that difference matters.

Traditional tutoring often focuses on homework help, reviewing classroom lessons, or practicing skills a student has already been taught. But when a child struggles with the foundations of reading, they may need something more targeted.

At Reading Reach Literacy Center in Oceanside, we provide specialized, evidence-based reading intervention designed to address the underlying skills that make reading difficult.

Our approach includes:

Why do letter names matter?

Learning the alphabet is more than memorizing the ABC song. Knowing letter names is an important part of building the foundation for reading.

Research has found that children who have stronger knowledge of letter names tend to develop stronger early literacy skills. Letter-name knowledge supports children as they learn to:

• Connect letters with their sounds
• Recognize letters quickly and automatically
• Develop phonemic awareness and phonics skills
• Begin decoding and spelling words
• Build the foundation for fluent reading

And there’s an important distinction: knowing a letter’s name is not the same as knowing its sound. Children need explicit opportunities to learn both.

At Reading Reach Literacy Center, we intentionally teach letter names, letter formation, and letter-sound relationships through explicit, systematic, multisensory instruction—because strong readers are built on strong foundations.

The ABCs really are the beginning of reading.

Building strong word-reading skills means helping students see how words are built, starting with sounds!

These vowel team onset-rime cards by @pdxreadingspecialist give students hands-on practice with recognizing vowel teams, blending onset and rime, and reading words more efficiently. Breaking words into meaningful, manageable parts can help students strengthen decoding skills while developing greater automaticity and confidence.
