POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15 through October 15 — and we’re kicking it off with some of the most beautiful children’s books in all of literature. 📚💚

Hispanic and Latino authors have given children’s literature some of its most powerful and important stories — stories about belonging, identity, family and the courage it takes to exist between two worlds and call both home.

From board books to picture books — here are 9 that belong on every shelf. Save this list and share it with every teacher and parent you know. 💚

Which one is already on your shelf? Drop it below! ⬇️

It’s Adult Education and Family Literacy Week — and this one is close to my heart. 📚💚

Because literacy doesn’t just happen in classrooms. It happens at kitchen tables. On car rides. At bedtime. In the in-between moments that nobody counts but everyone remembers.

Family literacy isn’t a program or a curriculum. It’s a lifestyle. It’s what happens when the adults in a child’s life show up — consistently, imperfectly, lovingly — and make reading and language part of everyday life.

Here are three simple things you can do THIS week to celebrate 👇

📖 Read aloud together — even for just 10 minutes
💬 Talk about a book at dinner tonight
📚 Visit your library or bookstore together this weekend

That’s it. That’s family literacy. And it matters more than you know. 💚

Tag a family that loves to read together! ⬇

Happy Constitution Day. 🇺🇸📚

On September 17, 1787 — 239 years ago today — 39 men signed their names to the most important document in American history.

And as a literacy educator — I can’t help but think about what that moment really was.

It was a writing moment. A reading moment. A literacy moment.

The entire foundation of American democracy was built on words. Carefully chosen, fiercely debated, intentionally placed words. Words that have been interpreted, argued over and built upon for nearly two and a half centuries.

That’s the power of writing. That’s the power of literacy.

When we teach children to read and write with intention — to choose their words carefully, to understand that language has power — we are giving them the same tools that built this country. 💚

Today — read the Preamble with your child. Out loud. Together.

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union…”

Eight words in and already one of the most powerful sentences ever written. 📚🇺🇸

Happy National Coloring Day! 🎨📚

And yes — we made coloring pages. Obviously. 😂

Because coloring is so much more than just a fun activity. It builds fine motor skills, focus, creativity and visual literacy. It gives children a way to express themselves without words. And it makes literacy feel like play — which is exactly what we want. 💚

We created these five TLTL coloring pages just for you and your little ones — and we want to see them brought to life! 🥹

Here’s how 👇
🖍️ Download and print your favorite (link in bio!)
🎨 Color it in — kids, parents, teachers all welcome

Happy Roald Dahl Day! 📚✨

Born September 13, 1916 — Roald Dahl gave the world something no one else could. Stories that trusted children with big emotions, dark humor and genuine mischief. Stories that never talked down to kids. Stories that made reluctant readers devour 200 pages without even realizing it.

He is one of the greatest arguments for reading that has ever existed. 💚

300 million books sold. Generations of readers made. A legacy that will never go out of print.

Which Roald Dahl book is YOUR favorite? Drop it below — and tag someone who needs to read one today! ⬇️😂📚

Earlier in the year Olympia stood in front of her class at @sousastrong_hsa and became Dolly Parton. 🥹

She studied her. She wrote a biography. She turned it into an autobiography — telling Dolly’s story in Dolly’s own voice. She drew her own costume, hung it around her neck, and pressed a button so her classmates could hear everything she’d learned.

That is literacy in its most beautiful and powerful form. Reading. Researching. Writing. Performing. Connecting to a life bigger than your own. 💚

And the life she chose to study? One of the greatest literacy advocates the world has ever seen.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has gifted over 200 million books to children around the world — one book a month, from birth to age five, completely free. She built it because she grew up without books. Because she knew what it felt like to not have access. And she spent her entire life making sure no child would feel that way. 📚🥹

We lost Dolly recently. And the world feels a little quieter for it.

But her books are still being delivered. Her library is still growing. Her legacy—in every sense—lives on. 💚

In honor of Dolly—go read something today. And if you can, donate a book to a child who needs one.

That’s what she would have wanted. 🥹📚

Yesterday was International Literacy Day. 📚💚

Every September 8th UNESCO reminds the world of something that should never need reminding — that literacy is a fundamental human right. Not a privilege. Not a luxury. A right.

763 million adults around the world still cannot read or write. Two thirds of them are women. 155 million children are not in school right now. And every single one of those numbers represents a person whose potential is waiting to be unlocked.

Literacy changes everything. Health outcomes. Employment. Self-confidence. Civic participation. The ability to tell your own story in your own words.

That’s why this work matters. That’s why teachers show up every single day. That’s why libraries exist. That’s why independent bookstores fight to stay open. That’s why we read aloud to our children before they can even hold a book. 🥹

Today — do one thing for literacy. Read something. Share something. Donate a book. Volunteer an hour. Support a literacy organization. Tell someone why reading changed your life.

Because literacy isn’t just about reading words on a page. It’s about access. It’s about equity. It’s about freedom. 💚

Happy (belated) International Literacy Day. 📚

Happy Labor Day. 🇺🇸

Today we celebrate the American worker. And as a literacy educator — I want to celebrate something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.

The labor movement was, at its core, a literacy movement.

The fight for workers’ rights wasn’t won on picket lines alone. It was won with words. Pamphlets passed hand to hand. Newspapers printed in secret. Petitions signed by workers who taught themselves to read and write just so their voices could be heard.

The written word has always been the most powerful tool the powerless have ever had. 📚

Reading and writing have never just been academic skills. They have always been acts of power. Acts of dignity. Acts of freedom. 🩵

Happy Labor Day to every worker, every teacher, every librarian and every literacy advocate who shows up every single day. 🇺🇸📚

This weekend marks both National Read a Book Day and International Buy a Book Day — and that reminded me of one of our favorite stops from early this summer. 📚✨

@kramerbooks in Washington D.C.‘s Dupont Circle — one of America’s most iconic independent bookstores since 1976. One of the first bookstore-cafés in the entire country. A place where Barack Obama, Maya Angelou and Andy Warhol have all browsed the shelves. 🥹

The girls found exactly what they needed. I found exactly what I needed. And we all left with more than we planned — which is honestly the only acceptable outcome of any bookstore visit. 😂💚

Notebooks. Cat books. Books I’ve taught. Books I’ve read. Books I didn’t know I needed until they were right in front of me.

That’s what independent bookstores do that nowhere else can. They find you before you find them. 🥹

So in honor of this weekend — go read a book. Go buy a book. And if there’s an independent bookstore near you? Walk in. Browse slowly. Leave with something unexpected. 📚

That’s literacy in its most joyful form. 💚

Here’s something worth knowing: a library card is one of the most powerful literacy tools your child will ever have. And it’s free.

Free books. Free audiobooks. Free programs. Free access to stories at every reading level — from the ones they breeze through to the ones that challenge and stretch them.

Speaking of reading levels — one of the most common questions I get from parents is whether kids should only read books at their reading level. My answer is always no. 💚

Kids should read books at their level, below their level AND above their level. The library makes all of that possible in one place, with one card.

I watched this work firsthand with a second grader who desperately wanted to read The Hunger Games. His reading level said it was too advanced. But with a library card — he checked out The Hunger Games AND the Magic Tree House series, and went back and forth between them depending on how focused and energized he felt.

It worked beautifully. Because that’s what libraries do. They meet every reader exactly where they are. 💚

🎙️ Full podcast episode linked in bio — go listen!

This month — if your child doesn’t have a library card, go get one. Today. It might be the most important thing you do for their reading life all year. 📚
