No books? Books 👍

Went to this huge bookstore in Amsterdam (5 floors) and bought no books but somehow got given a free book at checkout cause it was English Book Week 😼

As I returned to reading in my late teens, I’ve found myself intrigued by the depiction of madness in literature, particularly when viewed through the female perspective. Across genres and history, the label of ‘madness’ placed upon a woman has rarely been a simple medical diagnosis, instead it becomes a battleground and invites the question: is a woman losing her mind to her own internal fractures, or are these cracks from bearing the impossible weight of a world that refuses to let a woman speak her mind freely?

I’ve rounded up some books I’ve personally read that explore different aspects of female madness. The internet has bundled up this type of fiction under “weird girl lit”, but I fear this umbrella term flattens this vast and complex investigation of female psychological distress. What does it mean to actually lose one’s grip on reality (especially when it’s through systematic oppression, bodily autonomy or even pure paranoia)?

- the hearing trumpet (1974); ageism & occult liberation (?!)
- the vegetarian (2007); patriarchal control
- yellowface (2023); capitalist pressure & guilt-driven paranoia
- drive your plow over the bones of the dead (2009); voluntary isolation & ecological/environmental devastation
- the haunting of hill house (1959); domestic suffocation & psychological disintegration
- the yellow wall-paper (1892); forced isolation & bad medical advice :)

pick your poison, and let me know if you’ve read any of these yourself! This post came about after realizing 2/3 of my paris book haul was about female madness.

Very short September reading wrap up 🫶 It was a very busy month and my mind was so chaotic I couldn't concentrate on reading. Last quarter is proving very busy for work, but apart from that I have been travelling, moving and just stuck in my own thoughts 🫩 but we move and we continue with our life 💫

You know the burnout is real when you're halfway through September and posting about August reads 🫩 so tired plus also feeling sick on top of it yayy 😓 have not been in a reading mood (more like reading slump) so quick 3 little reads. A translated japanese horror story, short story collection from Oscar Wilde and some more Gabriel García Márquez 🫶

I don't hear much discourse on Oscar Wilde's writing apart from 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' but delving into some of his short stories I've been pleasantly surprised by his witty writing style. This was such a fun collection of short stories, with The Canterville Ghost being the most memorable 🥹 poor ghostie

Reminding myself that this was the aftermath of a weekend trip to London so I don't buy any more books ... until I go to London again ('cause why spend 17 euro on a paperback here when I can buy books for 10 pounds or under in the UK ;-;) Also don't ask me how many books from these I have actually read since I bought these... *looks away in shame*

Though I was browsing through the awesomebooks website earlier today - has anyone bought from there before? Especially the used books? I'm curious if the conditions of the used books are good - they seem to be really good prices. by @readingwithmelly

As my bookshelves are overflowing and excess books have started to be stacked on the dresser... I've decided to slowly tackle some books I've had on my shelf for ages. This one in particular? Probably have had this one for 3-4 years. I remember the moment I bought it actually - all high on my bachelor's thesis and thinking "oh! I'm in tech and I love a good romance so this might be good". Went into this thinking it would be cringy but was actually a very heartwarming story. Despite this being a romance, I found the main focal point of this story was actually friendship. Will admit at times the plot hit a bit too close too home which did leave me a bit sad... but then things were looking up and the hope came back lmao. Gave this 4 stars (for now) but honestly I probably won't read this again so.... to the donate pile?

Happy June! Wrapping up my May reads with my second Dazai, reading an arc after so long (!), getting out of the reading slump I was left with in April with some romance (Ali Hazelwood always does it for me) *and* finishing off with a spooky gothic haunted house story from Shirley Jackson!

Pics are all from my travels to Greece last month 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ right now all I want to do is sunbathe at the beach with a good book 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️
