A word: from your Favorite Literary OG. Forget Artificial Intelligence and bring back Authentic Intelligence.

One of the best ways to build your own “literacy learning model”? Go to the library!!! And remember—the library isn’t just for books. I go every week to check out magazines *and* books!

My weeklies keep me informed. My books keep me thinking. And the weird, completely unrelated things I pick up along the way are probably what keep me interesting-ish. (LOL.)

Dress by @kennethcole (I love it!) and frames of course are by @warbyparker!

TGIF!!! (Btw I had to explain to my students what that meant. 😂)

So I got into my classroom (AGAIN) to find all of the boards covered with the previous prof’s hieroglyphics. Might not seem like a big deal but there are like 9 whiteboards in the room so it takes a while to erase. So I left this note! 🗒️

To me, to walk out of a classroom without wiping your boards is giving entitlement. I put it in the same category of people who litter, don’t return their shopping carts, etc. What do you think?

Today’s sartorial choices almost made up for it though! ❤️
Heart skirt and red suede flats @jcrew
Button down @oldnavy
Glasses @warbyparker
Charm necklace @alejandra.and.co (Fells Point, Baltimore!

Today I asked students to write down three things they knew for sure and then to consider *how* they knew those things to be true. They offered examples that included the role of mitochondria in the cell or that 2+2=4. And for the how question, most talked about how they had learned these things (through books, lectures, experiments, etc.)—essentially through mediated knowledge.

That introduces the question of how we collate and codify systems of knowledge. Who decides how information should be classified and how they should be studied? Basically something becomes “knowledge” partly through social systems—i.e. human intervention—and that is an important point. Because what happens when knowledge domains are established by machines instead of humans? What is lost? Is anything gained?

Btw it’s Monday and I am wearing my new fave black @warbyparker frames (the Sonia), @onequince cashmere (legit the best oversized crewneck), obsessed with these silk Bermudas from @frankie_shop_ , and I love my @tonybianco heeled ballets (I walked 13k steps in them today already!!!)

Existential angst abounds! After this week’s media coverage of ex-Anthropic employee Jason Caxon’s indictment of the AI development universe (suggesting that tech leaders are racing to advance systems with the potential to render humans extinct), in today’s class we discussed the work of the late Secretary of Defense, Ash Carter, who tirelessly advocated for human-centered technology.

Carter earned a Ph.D. in Physics before entering the world of public policy, and as such, had a uniquely informed perspective on the risks and affordances of disruptive technology.

Read his 2018 white paper that I am teaching this semester here: https://www.belfercenter.org/publication/shaping-disruptive-technological-change-public-good

Also, because you know I love the fashion…Friday fit check:
@aritzia top
@zara pants and shoes (loving the oxblood color)
@warbyparker frames because I am an optical loyalist and these ones matched the color of my shoes (and my lipstick when I was put together this am LOL)

Happy first day of classes to all who celebrate lol! Seriously though, I LOVE the fall semester return to campus and I truly consider it a privilege to learn alongside my students every semester! This fall I did a big overhaul of my Communicating Science for the Public class at #MIT—think systems thinking, building a personal LLM, and more.

Also! I actually wore my hair down today (LOL, ty @dyson airwrap) and am sporting my new @warbyparker frames (obvi). Love this @onequince sweater, @zara culottes, @tonybianco shoes (I was influenced by @digitaltaylorr!), and my Fin pouch from @the_horse

Forget the “Dead Poets Society,” apparently we are now living in a “post-literate society.”

Depending on which survey you trust, somewhere between a quarter and half of American adults didn’t read a single book last year.

What happens to a culture when reading stops being how we learn, think, argue, and make sense of things? (Spoiler: nothing good!)

Here are the two essays I mention in this video:
1. jmarriott.substack.com/p/the-dawn-of-the-post-literate-society-aa1
2. www.theatlantic.com/press-releases/2026/07/atlantics-august-cover-the-age-of-reading-is-over/687836/?gift=P28Fmm_-NNO21sYTWfSw_MpcHsClbbEaIGJzajcX-Qk&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share
