It’s an uncomfortable mirror to look into but Kafka really made me stop to think about it.

I really wanted to love An Ocean Would Paint Me Blue, but honestly, I spent the whole time just waiting for something- anything- to actually happen. Credit where it’s due: a few chapters had writing so raw, gorgeous, and painfully relatable that I couldn’t get them out of my head (dropping those quotes in my next post because they deserve their own spotlight), but pretty prose can’t carry an entire book on its back.

The plot was completely flat, the characters never grew an inch, and that big turning point I kept holding out for just never came. Plus, is it just me, or have stories from Muslim writers coming out of Syria, Persia, Afghanistan, and Lebanon fallen into the exact same predictable loop? It’s always the identical backdrop, the same grief, the same pain—just copy-pasted over and over. There is so much rich life and culture to tap into, but this just felt like another remix of a formula we’ve seen a hundred times.

Honestly, the emotional side of this book was so good. The whole healing journey, the painful infertility struggle, and then getting that miracle pregnancy at the end, it really hits you right in the feelings.

But my god, the pacing was just too slow. The book is over 500 pages and it keeps repeating the same issues over and over. It felt like a chore to get through the middle part because nothing was moving forward. Love the message and the happy ending, but it definitely needed to be way shorter.
