BOOK REVIEW

Unworthy by Agustina Bazterrica, 4 ⭐️

This was an incredibly interesting, deeply viol**nt, and visceral book. It is dystopian and leans towards religious horror. It is quite short, written in a very accessible language yet in an experimental style.

I read this book very fast and I wanted to reread it immediately, I’m sure I missed so many things. After years of non stop greed and extraction, the world has been consumed and so has humanity. The humans that survived have turned into a perverse version of themselves. We read through the journal entries of our main character. She is in the lowest ranks of a new religious order, a cult. The old god has abandoned humans so they have started a new religion, still with an unnamed ‘Him’ at its head, who does get uncloaked at the end. The convent we are in is filled with women and they inflict the trauma on to one another. The understanding of sisterhood is completely flipped on its head.

Our main character has experienced the worst of humans and thus had to steel herself, very much viol**nce breeds viol**nce situation. Until one day she meets another woman who does remind her that healing is possible, there is still room for emotions.

Although quite bleak and uncomfortable, there is slight bit of hope in the book if one chooses to look for it. It is possible to read the story as a healing journey of sorts.

This book has stumped me. I would love to read your comments if you’ve read it because truly I’m not fully sure what to take away from it. by @readsofreverie

BOOK REVIEW 🍂🧙

The Bewitching, 3.25 ⭐️

This is an eerie story across three interconnected timelines. We follow three different women, who each battle with their own witches and solve their own mysteries. Although the book was nice, not all timelines were equally engaging and fell short on couple things.

I had a general thought while reading this book. I wish people who wrote fiction about witches and witch hunts stopped framing the problems and viole**nce around individualistic reasons disconnected from sociopolitical conditions and recognise the systematic nature the trials/figure of the witch played in bringing the new, capitalist, patriarchal world order. I haven’t read a book that handles the figure of the ‘witch’ as such. In this book as well, the witch is an isolated monster from folk tales.

Now for my comments on the different timelines:

1998 plot was for me the most interesting and atmospheric one. Yet the protagonist is one of the least sympathetic/hard to relate to characters I read in a while. The ways in which she interacts with/treats her ‘friends’ who do nothing by serve her throughout the book is especially aggravating. She treats everyone around her like an inconvenience. I didn’t like that the friends did not exist outside their relationship to her. On top of that her position as an English lit masters student was suspect as she spent the whole book acting like an investigative journalist. This is not how the writing/research process of a thesis goes, it was a bit hard to believe.

1934: This storyline had the most interesting characters and the most engaging relationships. The plot was thinner, I wish we could’ve read more about Ginny, Beatrice, and Edgar. I think their stories could’ve been explored more.

Interrupting my regular book content for a small tidbit I wanted to share. This conversation I overheard recently made me reflect and I wanted to share some thoughts here that were on my heart 💌

Kids grow up, kids go to therapy, kids talk about that time their mum made them feel small and insignificant at the bookstore.

Maybe I’m reading too much into things but I have to say there is a tendency to create hierarchies and feel superior if you’re a certain type of reader.

I reject this mindset so completely. The reason I love reading is that it allows me to connect with the rest of the people in this world, not put myself on an island looking down my nose at them. by @readsofreverie

BOOK REVIEW 🍂🍜📚

Taipei Story by R.F. Kuang, 5 ⭐️ (subjective rating)

Attending an author event before reading this book definitely made the reading experience that much more memorable and enjoyable. I also shared the notes I took during the author event (2nd post on the carousel)

This was a tender story and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

I loved the lush descriptions of language, food, surroundings, and culture. I loved the travel diary style of this book, especially in the first half.

I loved reading about Lili growing up, finding more confidence, learning to be comfortable with being alone, and reconciling her search for roots.

I loved how immature and self conscious these 19 year old roommates were. They were bad at communicating, insecure, and uncomfortable. This all led to Lili being isolated when she needed support the most. But perhaps this was for the best, because this is how we all grow up and Lili did grow up during this summer.

All of the character motivations, the intergenerational traumas, all made sense. These were devastating and so tender to read. Watching Lili navigate through all of this felt so realistic and it touched a deep part in my heart. I loved reading about her search for where she belonged in the world, she still doesn’t have the answers. That is life…

All in all, this little story felt very personal. I felt the genuineness in the writing. by @readsofreverie

BOOK REVIEW 📚✨

Solace House by Will Maclean, 3 ⭐️

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC.

This was an interesting book with an intriguing premise. Some things worked for me and some didn’t.

First off the setting was great, a spooky house story meets folk horror and our grip on reality is slipping. This promised to be right up my alley.

The characters were just okay, I didn’t care for or connect to our protagonist all that much and all the side characters were very one-note. They could all be summarised with one adjective, like the Christian prude, or the stoner boy, or the weirdo (very breaakfast club haha).

As for the actual story, it started out good but for me the book lost steam halfway through. In my opinion the author introduced too many (personal) mysteries that were kept secret for a long time and weren’t paced correctly. It got a bit frustrating because the mysteries are constantly mentioned as being a mystery and information is explicitly withheld. The characters were very much acting like “look at me I’m withholding info and I’m reminding you I’m withholding it”

Another thing that didn’t work for me is that the lore got way too convoluted. Too many threads were being woven in and extending far and beyond.

Nonetheless it was an okay book and if you like the style it might be worth to pick up. by @readsofreverie

She’s a Doll by Barbara Truelove

I definitely enjoyed this book. The tone was light and humorous, the plot was interesting to follow. I liked the friendship between Lu and Nic (even though Lu was a bit grating of a protagonist at times). It was a fun time, the ending did even bring a tear to my eye. It’s definitely worth your time if you want to read a fast and humorous revenge story that is on the lighter side.

For the slight bit of negative, there was quite a bit of repetition. I feel like I read the same ideas over and over again without a new perspective. I wish it was edited a bit tighter and more space was given to explore Lucy before her d*ath. I wish we could’ve read more of Kyle before the mOrder and r00pe of Nic, I feel like it would’ve made the story more impactful.
