Audiobooks 🤝🏻 Pregnancy/Postpartum

I shared briefly in my stories that we welcomed our first baby back in June 💙 To be frank, pregnancy kicked me in the butt and so has postpartum. I’m doing well (seriously, this isn’t is a cry for help, just honesty!), but my focus and attention span for reading has been minimal.

When I was looking at my @the.storygraph today, I realized 42% of my reading this year has been through audiobooks, which is a BIG change for me! They’ve been the perfect way to keep reading when I wasn’t feeling well and now on neighborhood walks with the baby.

These are the 8 audiobooks I’ve listened to this year, my quick thoughts, and whether I’d recommend them.

LFL Drop 📚

A huge, huge thanks to @celadonbooks for inviting me to participate in this @littlefreelibrary drop for Wait for Me by @burnsamyjo. They were kind enough to send me not one, but two ARC’s - one for me and one for a lucky neighbor! Let me know if any of you find it 👀

I’m a big fan of character driven novels and I devoured Mercury by Amy Jo Burns back in 2024, so I’m beyond excited to read Wait For Me. I’ve only read a few pages so far, but I know I’m going to love it.

Wait for Me is out March 3rd! Is this one on your radar yet?

Happy pub day to In a Distant Valley! I’m not ready for the road to end 😭

Thank you to @shannonbowring.writer and @europaeditions for this finished copy of In a Distant Valley! This is one of my most anticipated reads of the year - I simultaneously don’t want to start (because then it’s over) and also want to devour it in one sitting.

My current obsession 🤍

I started listening to the audiobooks for The Summer I Turned Pretty series back in June, and I quickly devoured all three books. I’m now watching the TV series on Prime and it has me swooning 😍 Am I emotionally invested in a fictional teenage love story while in my 30’s and happily married? 100% yes. I’m just grateful so many of you are along for the ride too, because I need to be talking about it 24/7!

If you haven’t read the books, I’d highly recommend the audiobooks - the cast of the TV series narrates the newer version of the audiobooks! There’s too much heaviness in the world, and these are such a sweet, fun, nostalgic break from reality (with a touch of heaviness). The books are more YA than the series, but I still enjoyed them. Prepare to feel like you’re back in high school!

What I’m reading on my Kobo (sort of)

My NetGalley shelf is slightly out of control - largely because of the changes that were made to the file types earlier this year and have prevented me from being able to add them onto my Kobo (cough cough @netgalley and @kobobooks, can you pick up the pace and fix this please and thank you?!)

Right now, only 2 of these 8 books can be read on my Kobo (aka the rest I have to read on my phone 😭)

Anyways, I think I’m most excited for Awake in the Floating City and The Girls Who Grew Big (both out now), but I’m intrigued by all of them! Thanks to the tagged publishers for the gifted eARCs 🫶🏼 by @readthemol

📚Fundamentally - a story about rehabilitating ISIS brides (shockingly humorous!)
📚When We Walk By - an important and powerful look at homelessness in America and how we can work together to find solutions.
📚Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books - listening on audio and I’m loving it!
📚The Berry Pickers - my most recent bookclub read with my grandmother that I’m hoping to start soon.

NYC🗽

A few bookish highlights from our recent trip to New York City:

-This adorable ‘Reading Room’ in Bryant Park, which had some amazing books I’ve loved - The Lion Women of Tehran, Seven Days in June
-I visited @strandbookstore for the first time and I was slightly overwhelmed by the sheer size of it and my limited time to browse BUT my husband bought a book 😍
-My brothers cute fireplace book collection!
-Our amazing seats for The Great Gatsby that we won through the lottery
-And a few skyline pics of course

May had me traveling 17 (!) out of its 31 days. A vacation to LA, a trip to Boston to see friends and family, a work trip to NYC, a trip to Maine to see family, a work trip to Boston, and finally a weekend in NYC with family. It was a wonderful month, but I’m sleepy 😴

All that to say, reading has taken a backseat recently, but I’m excited to have some quiet weeks/weekends coming up. How is it already June?! by @readthemol

Reading Update 📚

I spent most of the long weekend on the couch resting and reading, which was exactly what I needed!

Here’s a lil’ reading update:

📖 Lessons in Chemistry - I’m so close to finishing this one and really enjoying it!

📱The Love Haters - thank you @stmartinspress for the eARC. I’m a big fan of Katherine Center books, but unfortunately this one wasn’t for me 😕

📱The Nantucket Restaurant - thank you @bookmarked for the eARC, this one is out June 10th! I’m just starting it, but I’m intrigued.

🎧 The Favorites - I finished this one on audio at the end of last week and holy moly, I can see why everyone was obsessed with it! 🤯 I really enjoyed the audio production, there were a few things in the story that bothered me, but overall I loved it.

🎧 Three Days in June - I’m not sold on the story yet, but I’m giving it a shot!

Perks of the job ✨

I shared in my stories that I was traveling for work this week. My company hosts a couple of large conferences a year (in NYC and Boston) and while they are exhausting, it’s always a rewarding day with lots of great conversations…and books!

We ask guests to recommend a book for the conference (non-fiction, fiction, children’s books - whatever you’d like!) and then we purchase the suggestions to create a little library 📚 I’ve lucked out and been able to grab some amazing books at the end of the day - the first picture is books from this years conference, the second one is from the past few conferences, and the third is them all together. The last one is a photo of the color coordinated shelves from this year, I couldn’t help myself!

I’ve been acquiring books much faster than I’m reading them the past few months, but, as we all know, book buying/acquiring and book reading are two separate hobbies. I don’t make the rules 🤷🏼‍♀️

Passion Project 💌

“I don’t understand it, and if I could, I think l’d have unlocked the secret of life. I’d be the most powerful self-help guru on earth, and l’d make millions on a book titled Don’t Have Anxiety, It’s Just a Made-Up Thing in Your Head That Causes You to Do Crazy Things! and l’d spend my days in a villa in Greece never worrying about anything. I’d live my life and not ask questions.”

I mean, same girl, same! This was a debut that totally blew me away - I devoured it in a day!

Bennett is grieving the death of her first love, and is barely making ends meet living in NYC. When Bennett meets Henry, he promises to help her find her passion again - thus begins the “Passion Project”.

I loved this story because it’s not your typical romantic comedy. Sperry writes with incredible wit and humor, while also covering some heavy topics - mental health, grief - and while at the core it’s a lighthearted romance, there’s depth that kept me invested. I loved all of Bennett and Henry’s adventures!

To emphasize how much I enjoyed this one, I read it on my phone (ugh). There’s a file issue currently preventing NetGalley files from being added to Kobo ereaders. The point is, it’s clearly a page turner because phone reading is not it!

About that wit and humor I mentioned, here are a few of the lines that made me chuckle:

“Sounds like Humans of New York but murdery. Which, by the way, actually is a crime.”

“I give myself a mental high five for that sick burn…”

“…and rainbow pigs will fly out of my ass and start dancing the Macarena.”
