🎃✨October wrapup✨🎃

Spooky season is officially over, but I was so busy with family fun that I didn’t read nearly as much as I wanted to. We celebrated two birthdays within my immediate family, visited friends in North Carolina, had a haunted camping weekend with cubscouts, attended other friend’s birthday parties and had two emergency room visits! Every weekend was truly booked up with non bookish things and I felt like today I could finally catch my breath and get back to my chill lifestyle (except even today has been busy lol).

For my October reads, I loved The Measure and Threshing Day. I started the Emma Lion’s on audio, and now that I’m settled into the world and know the characters pretty well I am really enjoying the series! My least favorite was The Matchmaker’s Cottage, but that was still okay for me.

I really wanted to read some more spooky or witchy books, so maybe I’ll carry those into November, but it’s hard to resist the Christmas and winter holiday season!! Mood reading here I come!

I’m trying to have a slow and relaxing Sunday after the chaos of October, and I hope you all get to have that too!! by @readwithamyrohmer

Last week I got to visit North Carolina and see some friends, and I got to meet Kelly @kellyj1028 while I was there!! Kelly and I have been booksta friends for years now, so it was so so fun to finally reach out and say, “hey let’s get coffee and go to the bookstore together!”

We went to this cute coffee shop and then walked across the street to Pig City Books (all in Lexington) and it was a nice and relaxing Saturday morning!

So thankful that books brought Kelly and me together and I cannot wait to visit her again! And I love North Carolina and vacationing there, it’s so beautiful!! by @readwithamyrohmer

Julia Shaeffer runs a cute bed and breakfast on a lake in upstate NY. She spent her summers at this very lake growing up, and she loves her job now, but things get messy and complicated when her best childhood friend turned total stranger of almost a decade, Ethan Duchamp, texts her out of the blue, asking if he can play matchmaker to two famous celebrities at her B&B in hopes of saving his fancy PR job.

Told in a dual-ish timeline with present day and a few flashback chapters, this book is more an emotional romance and less romcom. I always love big emotions in books because I feel that lots of valuable lessons and character growth happen in those stories, and that definitely happened here. Julia and Ethan really had to self reflect on their friendship and issues from the past, AND on their wants and needs in present day, to figure out how to have a healthy relationship today.

My biggest issue was with the flashback chapters. I read this with a friend and we both agreed that the MCs were mean and somewhat toxic with each other. Most of the flashbacks showed Ethan being mean to Julia, and while I can totally understand that both Ethan and Julia had a lot of unpacked family baggage and drama and were hurting, it was still kind of hard to see any good between them in those moments.

I did really enjoy the writing style, and the open door intimate scenes were steamy, but not over the top crazy or crude. The fall vibes weren’t totally in your face, but it was still the fall season in a charmingly quaint and cozy picturesque small town. I thought this was a really good debut!

As a parent to young kids, I really noticed that unconditional love and open communication is so important for a healthy relationship with my kids. I’ve always loved romance for the actual romance, but it’s funny how as I’ve aged I’ve started to notice other components in the stories too (like the parent’s actions).

Overall, a like, not a love, and I’m excited to read more from this author. by @readwithamyrohmer

The Measure by Nikki Erlick
5⭐️

After reading The Poppy Fields and loving it, I decided to jump right in to The Measure. For years I’ve been seeing how amazing this book is, and I’m happy to report that I also loved this book!

The Measure is about everyone receiving a box to their front door with a string inside that tells you how long your life will be. The biggest question, of course, that arises from this is: Would you want to look at the length of your string?

These two books were very similar, while also being so different. Both books focused on major feelings and how those feelings dictate your actions and emotions. The Poppy Fields was centered around grief, while The Measure was centered around fear.

The vibes and pacing of the stories aligned with those emotions too. The Poppy Fields was sleepy and slow moving, with a little mystery, suspense, sadness and hopefulness sprinkled throughout, but ultimately was a huge warm hug of a book.
The Measure was action packed from the beginning, full of insanity and chaos. I felt angry reading the book at times because of how horribly similar to the real world we got in there. Fear makes people do crazy things and the global fallout was intense!

Both stories were so good at weaving together different storylines and POVs, and both books made me cry!! They both did a wonderful job of making me turn inward and think about how I would respond to these situations and what choices I’d make: Would I look at the length of my string? (Probably not). Would I go to sleep for a long time if it erased my grief? (Also probably not), but the books make great cases for all the sides!!

I cannot choose which book I liked more, because I genuinely loved them both. I do know that I’ll be reading her next book the second it’s out in the world. Thank you Nikki Erlick for these masterpieces 💗💗 by @readwithamyrohmer

✨Most Anticipated October Releases✨

As I was going through the new releases this month, I noticed it was a lot of Christmas or other winter holiday reads. I think it’s interesting that a lot of fall books come out in Aug or Sept and then we’ve moved on to winter before fall has even hit 🤣 but anyways, here’s all the October releases I am excited about! I’m probably most excited for the new Peter Swanson, but I also can’t choose between all the cute romances!

If you have any spooky or fall mystery or thriller recs, send them my way please! But yay for new releases and rip to my TBR! by @readwithamyrohmer

⚡️Happy Threshing Day⚡️

“There is nothing quite as humbling, or as awe-inspiring, as witnessing Threshing…for those who live through it anyway.”

I’ve got my Basgiath War College T-shirt on and I am ready to bond a dragon! Have yall seen the new website RY dropped where you can go through Threshing!?? I haven’t done it yet, but I will tonight!! And, I must point out, the irony that my Threshing Day preorder has not arrived yet is really something isn’t it?! Urgh. My husband was out of town this week, so I was unable to attend all the fun midnight release parties around me. I’ll be reading it the second my preorder arrives to my doorstep though, I can’t wait!

Until then, happy fall, happy October 1st, and happy Threshing Day! by @readwithamyrohmer

September came and went before I even knew it, but I’m so happy that fall is here! I had a big reading month and found some new favorite books! I’m still reading A Forsaken Prophecy so I’ll update my rating for that once I finish it!

Something About September
4⭐️

I chose this book as my first fall read of the season and I had a great time! Marissa Stapley writes some really cute romances under the name Julia McKay and it’s been so fun to read her holiday/seasonal books as they’ve come out! Christmas At The Ranch and The Holiday Honeymoon Switch are both winter/Christmas, but Something About September is a fall lover’s dream!

Rebecca Macintosh lives in Toronto, Canada, but must return to her hometown of Bramley Hollow on short notice to fix up her late grandmother’s diner. Rebecca hopes to hire someone who can do the bare minimum of work required to sell the diner, but she doesn’t anticipate the only available contractor being Cort Adams, her high school crush and the man who rejected her one year ago after her grandmother’s funeral.

The absolute best part about this book was the fall vibes. Bramley Hollow went all out for fall and took decorating and celebrating to the next level. They had an Autumn Festival with a dance, pumpkin growing contests, and apple orchards and farms with hay mazes and the best apple desserts one could wish for. I loved how the taste and scent of the apples was everywhere in the book. I have already saved some apple dessert recipes and can’t wait to get baking!

The romance in McKay’s books is comparable to our beloved Hallmark movies, and I know that’s not for everyone, but I find the stories sweet and refreshing. There was some miscommunication in our love story, but there was also a major theme about learning to take action in your own life and doing what makes you happy, so overall I just loved reading about Rebecca and Cort (and some other characters too-Sabrina!) grow and open up their hearts and find happiness!

Julia McKay Ranking:
💜 The Holiday Honeymoon Switch
💛 Something About September
❤️ Christmas At The Ranch
*I think The Holiday Honeymoon Switch and Something About September are tied for me, but I can’t decide if I like fall or Christmas more 😍🍁🎄
*Marissa Stapley also writes under her actual name, but also under Maggie Knox!! I have not read anything by Marissa or Maggie yet, but I plan to soon!! by @readwithamyrohmer

🎃🍂🍁Happy Fall🍁🍂🎃

Fall is finally here and I couldn’t be happier! I do love summer, but with school going on and these insane hot temperatures, I am just so ready to be less hot and for some fall flavors! My husband put some cinnamon chicken apple dish in the crockpot this morning and our house already smells heavenly!

I rounded up my favorite reads that feel like fall or give fall vibes, and I just love all of these books so much!! My fall TBR is even bigger, so I can’t wait to show those books and start reading through them!

I started Something About September a couple days ago and it’s already 10/10 for fall vibes! I’m so so ready for all the fall reads!!! 🎃🍁 I genuinely felt extra excited and happy this morning so I hope you all are having a good Tuesday AND that fall is bringing you some joy, too!! by @readwithamyrohmer

💚The Poppy Fields and Happy Place💗
5⭐️

My two most recent reads were both 5⭐️ for me and I’ve been thinking about them both for a week!!

The Poppy Fields was less science than I expected, and more a character journey for our group of friends, but it was so so good. It really made me think about what I’d choose and I got actual chills when little things would connect in the story. I was so teary eyed by the end and so emotional just imagining myself in those character’s positions. I loved this book so much, and now I MUST backtrack and read The Measure immediately.

Happy Place needs no introduction, but I finally read it and I really really enjoyed it! I had some beef with our FMC Wynn (but still could understand his side of everything), and I loved how emotional the story was! I love love love a good *second chance* and I flew through this. After serious consideration of my EmHen ranking, I think Happy Place comes in second behind Beach Read as my favorites!! by @readwithamyrohmer
