Hi! I'm Chuck! I am brand new to bookstagram!
I am back in school studying something I truly love: literature! This makes me a student not an expert!

I read 191 books last year so I have a lot to review! Everyone has been super sweet and welcoming so far. So Happy to be here 📚 ❤️ I live in Austin, Texas. I have a corporate job but my passion is reading and writing. by @readwithchuck

Tana French was my introduction to the literary thriller genre. Her writing is top tier and her books have gripped me. One of my favorite books is "The Likeness".

Toni Morrison is a literary genius. Her words have stayed with me years after I've read them. "Sula" is my favorite.

Dennis Lehane has written some of the best thrillers I've ever read. My favorite is "Darkness, Take my Hand".

Liane Moriarty writes about love, friendship, families, and so much more. She has a sharp wit and is absolutely hilarious. My favorite is "What Alice Forgot".

I read my first Mary Higgins Clark book when I was 11. She was once called "The Queen of Suspense". She has a massive catalog. She is my go-to author when I am in a reading slump. My favorite is her first book "Where are the Children?" The story was incredible and at no point did I guess the truth. I highly encourage anyone who loves mysteries/thrillers to read MHC.

Sara Shepard has a special place in my heart. After law school I was in a massive reading slump. I decided to read the "Pretty Little Liars" books and I was cured! She also has a massive catalog. My favorite is "The Lying Game" books because that ending had me gagged.

Chuck Palahnuik is for my weird girls. His books are beautifully inconsistent and I'm here for it. My favorite is "Invisible Monsters" I read this with my sissy when I was at tech school and she was still in high school.

There is nothing that can substitute primary accounts and sources of historical events. I will read anything written by black authors who experienced these events. Even when their perspective/account makes me want to go back in time and slap them (looking at you Booker T). My favorite is Ida B Wells "Southern Horrors".

These books are easily digestible. They give basic information about the subject. They are great starting points in any subject you are interested in. My favorite is "Don't Know Much About Mythology".

I am not big on biographies or memoirs but I will make an exception if the person writing it is funny. David Sedaris made me laugh the most but my favorite is "Yes Please" by Amy Poehler. My perception of her changed after reading her book. She is a l taken in Austin, Texas by @readwithchuck

I have been in a reading slump for a few days now. Typically I am consuming 3 books 📚 at the same time 🎧.

These books are bit out of my comfort zone so I am hoping they'll get me back into the reading groove. 💃🏽

What do y'all suggest? How do you get out of reading slumps? taken in Austin, Texas by @readwithchuck

So much of what happens in flim noirs (&thrillers) is propelled by obsession. It can lead to the truth but often with a deadly cost. 🕵🏽‍♀️

If you like classics or thinking about watching a few check these out along with my suggestions!

🎥Classic Film: All About Eve is one of my favorite films. It tells the story of Eve, a seemingly small-town girl who is the biggest fan of esteemed actress, Margot. It turns out demure Eve is a ruthless and cunning person who stops at nothing to achieve her dream of becoming a famous actress.

📖Suggested Book: The Understudy is about Kit, a talented, but unremarkable opera singer, who feels threatened by her beautiful and charismatic understudy, Yolanda. Soon, Kit begins to suspect that Yolanda will do anything to be a star.

🎥Classic Film: The Hitchcock classic, Rear Window is about a man with a broken leg with too much time on his hands so he spies on his neighbors. The beautiful Grace Kelly is his girlfriend for some reason. He has little to offer and is poor and old. Now he's got her tangled up in trying to figure out of his neighbor is a k*ller.

📖Suggested Book: The Girl in the Green Raincoat is a wonderful novella about Tess, a PI who is heavily pregnant and becomes obsessed with solving the disappearance of neighbor she's only seen from her window.

🎥Classic Film: Ah Double Indemnity how I love thee. This movie got me into flim noirs. It was made (like all the classics in this post) during the time of the Hays Code. These were censorship guidelines for all films from 1934 to 1968. Nothing overtly s*xual, gay, anti-government or religious, no sympathy for bad guys, and no cursing was allowed.

Everything in Double Indemnity had to be cleverly implied. Please watch this flim it is truly a master class in cinema. It is about a wife (femme fatale) who seduces an insurance salesman (the dupe) to k*ll her husband.

📖Suggested Book: Sacred, by one of my favorite authors, Dennis Lehane, is a neo nior book that I would recommend to anyone who loves flim noir.

🎥Classic Film: Sunset Boulevard is about an aging actress, Norma, who cannot face the reality of her circumstances. A has-been screenwriter who is a never-was taken in At Your Door by @readwithchuck

ACL! 🎶 This was my first music festival (I think?)

I went to a lot of concerts when I was young and I was not always sober.🍸🍃

I was there at about 1:30pm. It was super chill and I hung out with the other old folks under a tree for a few hours. 👵🏽

○Food 🍟🍔🧋was pricey but so good.
○The walk 🚶🏽‍♀️there and back was long.
○The gworls showed up and showed out..the men were there. 🧍‍♂️
○I had a one day pass for Friday and it was enough for me.
○The dust wasn't that bad 😷...until it was.

I love music but I am not a huge fan of any of the acts so I was there for the vibes. Which I think is a lot more fun. 🤔

...because now I am a huge fan of several of the acts! I loved our hometown girl🇨🇱 Bella Kay! I also loved Radia Free Alice. Check 'em out!

It got crazy crowded as the day went on so I decided to head out early. 🛌🏽

Any of my Ausin locals attend?

After looking through my cookbooks, I decided they were for advanced cooks. 🍳

So I went to the library and picked up a cookbook for beginners: "Open Wide" by Selena Gomez's current husband, Benny Blanco. 🌮

Most of the recipes are easy to follow and accessible. I had all the ingredients for the strawberry compote (not so thick jam). 🍓

Omg! 😲 it was delicious 😋. I ate it all in one sitting! I felt like Joey on "Friends" when he ate all that jam. 🍴

Texas Conference for Women!
💫Highlights💫
1. America Ferrara
2.Tunde Oyeneyin (hey cousin!🇨🇩🇳🇬)
3. Hoda Kotb

They were all so gorgeous and incredibly charismatic in-person. America is teeny tiny! She was so humble and honest. Loved her vibe.

I was going for a boss business lady vibe👩🏽‍⚖️ but ended up looking like I was going door-to-door trying to get you to join my cult. 🫠

Did y'all attend? The books were all sold out but I have them on order! 📚

Let me know your thoughts 💭
