A powerful exploration of racism, injustice, empathy and the loss of innocence, seen through the eyes of young Scout Finch. Through Tom Robinson’s trial and Boo Radley’s story, the novel exposes society’s tendency to judge people without understanding them, while highlighting how race influences who receives justice and compassion. A thought-provoking classic that reminds us to look beyond appearances and consider the world from someone else’s perspective. #bookblog #books #harperlee #tokillamockingbird #classicliterature by @readwithhibba

‘All of the countries named as “underdeveloped” in the world are explored by others; and the underdevelopment with which the world is now preoccupied is a product of capitalist, imperialist and colonialist exploitation.’ Pg. 16

‘Since underdevelopment deals with the comparative economics of nations, it is the last kind of exploitation… One of the common means by which one nation exploits another and one that is relevant to Africa’s external relations is exploitation through trade.” Pg. 27

‘The American imperialists go so far as to take the folk music, jazz and soul music of oppressed black people and transform this into American propaganda over the Voice of America beamed at Africa.’ Pg. 32

‘When Europeans reached the Americas, they recognised its enormous potential in gold and silver and tropical produce. But that potential could not be made a reality without adequate labour supplies. The indigenous Indian population could not withstand new European diseases such as smallpox, nor could they bear the organised toil of slave plantations and slave mines, having barely emerged from the hunting stage. That is why in islands like Cuba and Hispaniola, the local Indian population was virtually wiped out by the White invaders. At the same time, Europe itself had a very small population and could not afford to release the labour required to tap the wealth of the Americas. Therefore, they turned to the nearest continent, Africa, which incidentally had a population accustomed to settled agriculture and disciplined labour in many spheres. Those were the objective conditions lying behind the start of the European slave trade, and those are the reasons why the capitalist class in Europe used their control of international trade to insure that Africa specialised in exporting captives.’ Pg. 89 by @readwithhibba

A retelling of the classic Little Women, this book focussed on the death of Beth but turned it into a murder mystery- where everyone is a suspect. I liked this modern twist to the original tale

Interesting and current, this book discusses post 9/11 attitudes against a wide range of Muslims, including Uyghur Muslims and those facing the Kashmir and Palestine conflicts. The crisis of Christchurch is mentioned and also the notion of how Islamophobia affects the global community

The adult sequel to The Illustrated Mum, I liked this book. It was quick and easy to read and flowed well, like 27 years hadn’t passed between its writing. Dolphin’s character is exactly how I’d expect her to be but I felt Star was a bit more of an over-achiever than I had imagined.
