POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I've been reflecting on purpose and how so often we search and search and search expecting some grand sign. It's okay to just live for a while. You are loved. You are enough. Thank you to Becky Chambers for another wonderful story.

August Wrapped!

This month was Women in Translation month and I read three absolutely beautiful books.

1. Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 - This is a controversial Korean feminist book that follows a woman from childhood who is "losing it". It blends fact and fiction and so many things that Kim Jiyoung experiences can be said for all women.

2. The Lost Daughter - Elena Ferrante knows how to write women very well. Let's just say motherhood is complicated.

3. Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead - Janina lives in rural Poland studying astrology and translating poetry. Hunters begin dying around her and what ensues is a thriller and reflections on hunting, astrology, health and the power of one middle-aged woman.

Wild Dark Shore was a five star read for me. It was so beautiful in its prose and descriptions of the natural beauty of the island, animals and seeds. Plus there was a mystery and love story. Charlotte McConaghy is now one of my favorite authors. If you haven't read this or Migrations, please do!

Margo's Got Money Troubles was a very entertaining novel with highly likeable characters. I really loved this book and am going to watch the show. Has anyone watched it?

"Literature is art, it is human creation, and this makes it universal. The fact that translation can take literature outside the borders of its original language is a gift, and I believe gifts shouldn’t be ignored, that they come with an obligation. Celebrating translated fiction means celebrating the human capacity for courage and domestication: that we can take a work, mount it like a horse, and send it anywhere in the world as a messenger. Thanks to translation, the message is able to travel and not lose its way, to reach its destination and not be misunderstood; translation moves treasures from one place to another, expanding our heritage, leaving no one the poorer." Eva Baltasar, Author

August was Women in Translation Month and here are some books that I have read or want to read written by women and translated. The world feels smaller when we understand each other.

July Wrap Up

Another month of beautiful, heart-breaking reads and a moment for my out of control backyard daisies.

Yesteryear - Book club read that I was excited for based on the concept but I was a little disappointed.

How to Kill A Witch - Very interesting to hear about the witch accusations in Scotland and interationally.

This is How You Lose the Time War - This book caught be off guard with a beautiful love story and rebellion through letters.

To Be Taught If Fortunate - MUST READ. Becky Chambers is one of my favorite authors.

The Cabin in the Woods - This was a fun thriller.

Crying in H Mart - I put off reading this memoir for so long and what a mistake. This book will make you cry.

Universality - This book was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2025. I had high expectations and I'm glad I read it but I didn't enjoy the book. I am going to read Assembly by the same author. by @readwithneepa

Top Books: Kaikeyi and Pachinko

This month was a month of five star books. It included a re-read of Station Eleven for book club, historical fiction Pachinko, fantasy mythology Kaikeyi and surprise hit Beautyland.

Kaikeyi - I knew the basics of the Ramayana through stories from my parents and books and this book did not disappoint. I need a followup!

Station Eleven - I re-read this for our book club and it is even better the second time and post-Covid. Looking forward to watching the show.

Beautyland - A coming of age science fiction novel that hit me hard. What beautiful observations of the human condition. It had be sobbing and laughing.

Pachinko - This is a family saga historical fiction novel that follows a Korean family living in Japanese-occupied Korea and then Japan. Why did I wait so long to read this book? This has to be one of my favorite books.

Agent Ethan Burke wakes up in a quaint mountain town called Wayward Pines after an accident. His memory is full of holes and nothing is as it seems. He just wants to leave... but he can't.

The Wayward Pines trilogy is quite a wild ride, combining the eeriness of Twin Peaks and the pace of an action movie. Each book is a gripping page turner with twists and turns.

The revelation at the end of Book 1 was very well done. Wayward Pines was not at all what I expected and I needed to know more.

If you're looking for a science fiction thriller, this one is sure to keep you on your toes. I don't know why I waited so long to read it.

I recently watched the TV series. Let's just say that Season 1 was definitely worth watching but I can't say the same for Season 2. This is one of those instances where I felt the books were much, much, much better than on screen. However, I keep hearing people thought the opposite. Have you read any books that were better on screen? by @readwithneepa

Top Books: Dungeon Crawler Carl series

How did I get sucked into the Dungeon Crawler Carl series? I am a nerd at heart and this literary rpg series has me hooked! I had to take a break because I was going through them so fast. Princess Donut, I bow to you!

Good Inside came at the right time for me. Dealing with toddler tantrums is no joke. Knowing that there's an unmet need and everyone is good inside is a great reminder.

How to Pronounce Knife is a collection of short stories centered on the Loatian Canadian immigrant experience in Canada. What a wonderful collection!

Not Quite Dead Yet had me turning the pages late into the night. It is a thriller with a very interesting premise. It read a little bit YA for me but still kept me reading.

A book haul that is for charity! I visited the Calgary Reads Big Book Sale this weekend with some wonderful friends. There were hundreds of tables and books on every topic you could think of. We each found so many books - some to read, some as trophies. Not pictured: the piles of children's books we all snagged.

Top Books: The Mad Wife and Foe

This month included two short stories that were vastly different. The Yellow Wall-Paper was an eerie and tense look at women's mental health. Tiger was a short story that stopped right when it started getting interesting.

Foe and A Minor Chorus were my picks from the Canada Reads shortlist. Neither book won but both are books I'd recommend.

Foe - I didn't see the twists coming and the story kept me turning pages.

A Minor Chorus - An autofictional book that is beautifully written and features raw thoughts and big emotions.

If You Love It, Let It Kill You was a book club read. It generated great discussion as some loved the book and others (like me) did not. The story line was similar to The Wedding People but didn't deliver for me.

The Mad Wife - My top book of the month. I did not see that ending coming and it made me want to re-read the book knowing the ending. A very suspenseful read with women's mental health at its core - highly recommend! by @readwithneepa

Quote of the Day
Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller

I read Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books for a work book club right wheb Alberta's book ban was announced. It was such a wonderful book on the power of stories and the danger of fear-based censorship. Stories allow us to step into someone else's shoes, to understand ourselves, and to learn what we want for our futures.
Read diversely. Read banned books.
