Ready, Set, Read! started up again on Friday, after school, for our school community. Story time at 3.30pm - I always try to select books that deliver a message, fit a theme or leave students thinking!
This week I shared new publication - My Feelings, My Rules by Nicki Esler Gill @nickieslergill and Kristi Desai @the.wander.wagon. This is a delightful rhyming book about the changing seasons of feelings that come and go. Superbly illustrated and recommended age range 3-7.

Hey Little Ant by Phillip & Hannah Hoose is celebrating 20 years of publication! This is a book to inspire our youth to care for nature and all living things. It’s written as a funny dialogue exchange between the ant and human and the illustrations are a stand out feature to deliver the dialogue!

I finished reading this new release ‘Nowhere House’ by entertaining author Adrian Beck @adrianbeckbooks these school holidays. I have to say, it kept me on the edge of my seat! This is the story of a family uprooting their life and moving into an old, abandoned house, where kids leave life as they know it behind and find themselves unraveling the mysteries and secrets of the past! Adrian Beck leaves you hanging in suspense at the end of every chapter and weaves his sense of humour throughout with some witty one liners! Adrian Beck … you had me at “RUN!” 🫣
This is an entertaining middle grade read with twists, turns and a great male lead character! Put this one on your ‘must read’ list. You won’t be disappointed!

Yesterday’s Ready, Set, Read! featured the gorgeous picture books ‘Twinkle’ by Nick Bland (author of the Hungry Bear series) and ‘Mad Magpie’ by Greg Dreise @greggdreise

Twinkle is a lovely story about a little girl who befriends a fallen star and seeks to find a way for it to go back up into the sky. The illustrations are simply delightful!

Mad Magpie has a central theme of a magpie being bullied by a bunch of butcher birds. This is a meaningful story to share with children as it gently teaches the behaviour to model when bullying behaviour occurs … and who doesn’t love a magpie! 😍

Happy school holidays! Find time to go on an outing to a local or not so local bookshop and explore the wonders of reading!

Never have I ever wanted to cheer on a character more than Olive in ‘Raised By Wolves’ by award winning author Tristan Bancks! @tristanbancksbooks
I promised myself that when I finished writing my students’ reports I would read this! I’m so glad I did. Tristan credits teachers and teacher-librarians in this book for reading Two Wolves to their classes over the years and asking the question, ‘But what happened to the characters?’
I have to also thank Tristan for replying to me last week about an epic line I spotted and asked about. 🙏🏻

Every cliff-hanging chapter ending leaves you wanting to yell out loud to the central character Olive as she makes some of the bravest, impulsive choices I’ve seen a character of her age make in a long time!
Tristan Bancks, the master storyteller, once again takes us on a fast paced, action packed, emotional roller-coaster of a ride as this story continues 5 years on from Two Wolves. I couldn’t put it down. Storytelling at its absolute best! 👌🏻

In this week’s Ready, Set, Read! I read a beautiful story that I picked out weeks ago but didn’t read. ‘The Emperor’s Egg’ by Rae Tan.
I had a captive audience for this wonderful story, based on an ancient Chinese folktale. An aging emperor needs a new successor to his throne so he gives eggs to children. After thirty days he will judge, from what the children return, who will take the throne.
A heartwarming tale of persistence, courage, truth and love. Highly recommended!!! 👌🏻📚

AND … from the popularity of last week’s ‘Do Not Open This Book’ by Andy Lee, I invested in a copy of his 11th installment in this series (Yes 11!) and the kids loved it! I loved the little snippets of factual information about space woven into the text! Very clever @andytomlee 👏🏻👏🏻

Today’s Ready, Set, Read! Included two ever-popular requests by students … ‘Do Not Open This Book’ by Andy Lee @andytomlee (always a fun read) and ‘The Very Noisy Bear’ by Nick Bland (great series) plus the beautiful new publication ‘One Last Leaf’ written by Patrick Guest @patrickguest_author. A beautifully written and illustrated book by Jess Racklyeft about connection, holding on, love and loss. We really enjoyed this one. 👌🏻

‘Into The Storm’ by Hayley Lawrence … I’m so excited to have this in my hands. 🙌🏻 I couldn’t put its predecessor ‘Into The Wild’ down (see past post in my feed) when I read it last year. If this is anything like that, it’ll be a long weekend page-turner! Thank you @hayleylawrenceauthor for this next installment.

Yesterday’s Ready, Set,Read! library afternoon had a LIBRARY theme and you could have heard a pin drop at 3.30 Storytime when I read ‘The Library Lion’ by Michelle Knudsen @michelle.knudsen … except when I got all the kids to ROAR like a lion because they always help me read the book! 👌🏻 What a beautiful story about libraries, librarians, rules, breaking rules, trust, friendship …. it had all the feels. I had not read this previously so it was an absolute delight to share it for the first time with my little audience!
I recommend adding this one to your collection as you will revisit it again and again!

To coincide with National Simultaneous Storytime this week, we also had a Guessing Competition where students had to guess how many Luna Roo books were in the jar, to win a copy of the book! Fun for everyone!

Oh my goodness, in the whirlwind that is report writing time for classroom teachers, I missed posting what I read for Ready, Set, Read! on Friday. I chose this gorgeous book - Dog Stayed by Tammy Foster @tammy__forster, superbly illustrated by Margeaux Davis @margeauxdavis.illustration.
“A tale of love, loyalty and the changing seasons of life. Mr Hindbottom does not want Dog, but Dog isn’t going anywhere ... A heartwarming story about two grumpy but loveable characters and their journey of hope and renewal.”
