i’m late on posting but it’s #baketober week 2! this time, i’m showing off these butter pecan bars (recipe from @halfbakedharvest)

easy-to-make recipe, though it does take a few steps. bonus is that this is the least intimidating caramel sauce recipe i’ve tried, which actually makes these actually caramel, coconut, chocolate pecan bars. 🤤

a few recent book buys — all illustrated edition

went looking for some horror comics recently and stumbled upon these! i do love Junji Ito, though man, the drawings are truly terrifying. the others are completely new to me, but the illustrations seemed different and interesting. and then for something completely different: i’ve read Gender Queer, but this annotated edition is so cool and adds another layer to the narrative.

what books have you bought recently?

genre reader: horror edition. featuring quotes from some of my fav horror novels for spooky season.

while i read pretty much everything, i’ll always return to horror. i think, like horror movies, they allow authors to really be creative, to do things that haven’t been done before. i love how horror can turn the ordinary on its head, and make you look at things differently.

also, the tree in my backyard is really coming through this fall!

gold star behaviors: bookish edition

i’m basically just calling myself out in this carousel. please tell me there are others out there who do these things too? 😅

keeping a book on your bedside table even though you have NO intention of reading tonight. honestly, i appreciate the intention.

continuing to read after the bookmark fell out because apparently we’re now “trusting our memory.” bold choice (and probably a bad one).

#whousesbookmarksanyways

finding a typo in a book and immediately appointing yourself editor-in-chief. not like you haven’t made several embarrassing typos yourself or anything.

#everyoneneedsaneditor

checking how many pages are left and doing the math in your head to figure out if you can finish the book tonight. and knowing you’re probably going to stay up late reading it anyway.

refusing to #dnf because you and the book “have been through so much together!” give it up already.

seeing someone reading your favorite book in public and deciding you should be best friends. and then not interacting with them at all because god forbid you interrupt someone reading. by @readywatchthis

a little #caturday action + a #recentread

finished Blacktail, Scott Hawkins’ second novel and follow up to one of my favs, The Library in Mount Char. this is definitely not a sequel, but it does have a similar feel. Scott Hawkins creates unabashedly dark, fantastical, and philosophical fiction that is a romp to read. i think because i loved The Library on Mount Char so much this one didn’t land as hard for me, so i’m giving it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

truly enjoy seeing Hawkins’ continued exploration of the mythology he created in Mount Char. the last third of the novel felt a little disjointed, and the novel’s time and character jumps during that portion made the resolution not as impactful as it maybe could’ve been. felt this started off incredibly strong, though, and enjoyed the novel’s exploration of inherited trauma, man vs. nature, and what it means to challenge beliefs.

what have you read recently?

in honor of the start of 🎃 spooky month 👻, would i make it through these horror novels?

likely not, as a well-known scaredy-cat, but let’s give me the benefit of the doubt, ok?

#horrorbookstagram #horrornovels #spookyreads

would i survive American Psycho: #hearmeout yes, mostly b/c i inherently distrust finance bros 😅

would i survive #BattleRoyale: absolutely not, there’s no way. might survive a few days just by hiding but definitely not much more than that.

would i survive Play Nice: sure, b/c i’m certainly not going anywhere near a #hauntedhouse

would i survive Strange Pictures: lol, ok yes, but JUST b/c i wouldn’t be able to figure out the picture puzzles, so i wouldn’t get drawn into the mystery.

would i survive The Only Good Indians: nope. not b/c i hunt, but b/c 1) i’m terrible at basketball (iykyk) and 2) look at my ancestors #idprobablydeserveit by @readywatchthis

coffee: a book’s best friend

because books understand that a reader (aka…me) can’t possibly be bothered to deal with fictional problems unless they have a boatload of caffeine. happy national coffee day ☕️

best parts of work travel:

📚 seeing what books are stocked in airports
⏰ having time to finish a book…or two or three…

visited Minneapolis for a whirlwind 25 hours and finished The Buffalo Hunter Hunter. LOVED it, btw, perfect mix of historical fiction + gruesome horror. actually made me gasp out loud at one point!
