Does Vietnamese “là” mean the same as the English verb “to be”? 🤔

Not exactly! 🇻🇳

In Vietnamese, “là” is commonly used to connect a subject to a noun or noun phrase, but it is NOT needed in every sentence where English uses am, is, or are.

👉 Mình là giáo viên. — I am a teacher.
👉 Mình mệt. — I am tired. (NOT Tôi là mệt.)
👉 Cô ấy đẹp. — She is beautiful. (NOT Cô ấy là đẹp.)

Understanding this difference will help you avoid one of the most common mistakes English speakers make when learning Vietnamese.

Learn REAL Vietnamese — not just textbook Vietnamese! 🇻🇳

Don’t Say “RẤT” When You Want to Show Emotion! 😲🇻🇳 | Real Vietnamese

Want to sound more natural and emotional in Vietnamese? 🇻🇳

Vietnamese speakers often use THẾ, QUÁ, LẮM to express feelings and reactions — rather than simply using RẤT.

👉 Đẹp thế! — So beautiful!
👉 Đẹp quá! — So beautiful! / How beautiful!
👉 Đẹp lắm! — Very beautiful!
👉 Ngon thế! — Wow, it’s so good!
👉 Hay quá! — That’s amazing!

Rất is correct, but in everyday conversation, thế / quá / lắm can sound much more natural and expressive.
