Tonight the sun sets for the dawn of a new chapter in the human story.

This weekend I watched the sun set over Yosemite Valley and reflected on how our sense of belonging precedes our sense of duty and purpose.

Let us always remind each other we belong.

#belonging secures our shared purpose and #voting enshrines it.

As we look at today’s crises and look for solutions, two signs give me hope: increasing empowerment of the marginalized and human-centered technological advancement.

Desmond Tutu reminds us that “We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world,” he said. “When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.”

One of humanity’s distinctive features is our ability to work together at scale in versatile ways. It may also be the key to solving some of our world’s toughest challenges.

Last September, in partnership with Bill & Melinda Gates’ group “Co-Impact,” we hosted an intimate gathering of philanthropists & impact investors at a Manhattan penthouse ( designed by @zahahadidarchitects ) to discuss the kinds of collaborations needed to tackle issues like climate change, gender equality and hunger. The New York Philharmonic String Quartet provided some balanced ambience during the evening.

Later this month in Zurich, our group, the “Sovereign Family Alliance,” will convene its second reception with investors, philanthropists and scientists specifically looking to tackle climate change. On the following day we will look at specific opportunities to pool our collective knowledge & resources to invest in interventions like clean technology and smart city infrastructure.
