20 years ago today saw the execution of UMass SoCA's first cultural banquet and the first event that I had planned, but never got to see for myself. I was told it was a success, but it might have been a disaster if it weren't for @pkborneo and @zaraawl. In my senior year at UMass, I rechartered the English Speaking Caribbean Association (ESCA) and renamed it Students of Caribbean Ancestry (SoCA) to be more inclusive. I treated that first cultural banquet like a baby and wanted to do everything myself. I booked the food, DJ, live entertainment and keynote speaker, and didn't feel the need to involve my board in the process. One day, Patricia and Sara confronted me and told me it was ridiculous that I wasn't sharing any details with them, and luckily, I had the sense to listen. Tragically, I had to go home to The Bahamas just before the banquet happened to say goodbye to my father. If it weren't for their intervention, all my planning efforts would have been for nothing. I always recal this event when I think about the importance of delegation and information sharing when working on a team project. by @realcooldre
