How poetic is this? 🧩

A 252-piece custom puzzle of my book cover, Designing in the Dark. Almost complete, but not quite.

I could get deep about what it means to have a puzzle nearly finished, with just a few pieces still left on the board. The journey, the work, what’s still ahead…

But I’d rather let you finish your own puzzle. :)

There’s something deeply honest about the way Richard Avedon photographed aging.

I was invited to experience Richard Avedon Immortal: Portraits of Aging, 1951–2004 at The Image Centre at TMU, and what struck me most was how quickly status disappears in front of his camera. Artists, cultural icons, kings, queens and presidents are photographed with the same uncompromising vulnerability. Avedon had a way of peeling back the shell until what remained was simply human.

And perhaps these photographs feel even more important today.

We live in a time obsessed with erasing age. Filters soften our faces. Retouching removes the lines. AI can give us back decades in seconds.
Avedon did the opposite.

He photographed the wrinkles, the fatigue, the texture and the passage of time. Aging wasn’t something to correct. It became part of the portrait, evidence of a life lived.
Eventually, time strips away the titles.

What remains is human.

And through Avedon’s camera, somehow, immortal.
