Some mixes sound “worked on.”

You can hear the decisions —
the processing, the adjustments, the fixes.

Others don’t draw attention to any of that.

They just feel coherent from the start,
even if a lot happened behind the scenes.

That’s usually not about doing less —
it’s about doing things in a way that doesn’t expose the process.

Once things are working,
the job shifts from fixing to enhancing.

Without a reference,
it’s easy to get used to your own mix.

After a while, everything starts to feel normal —
even things that aren’t working.

That’s why decisions can feel harder over time,
not easier.

A good reference doesn’t tell you what to do.

It just makes it obvious again
what you’re actually hearing.

Over-mixing rarely starts with a bad decision.

It usually starts when nothing feels quite right anymore.

You keep adjusting small things,
hoping the clarity will come back.

But the more you change,
the harder it becomes to tell what actually helped.

At that point, it’s not about the mix anymore —
it’s about perspective.
