We’re very excited to share that we are the Exhibition & Graphic Designers for The Music is Black: A British Story - the inaugural exhibition at V&A East Museum, opening 18 April.

Visitors will encounter extraordinary artefacts, including Winifred Atwell’s piano carved with fans’ names, one of the oldest stringed instruments in the world, the provocative green suit and spiked headpiece worn by singer-songwriter Skin – the first Black woman to headline Glastonbury in 1997, and many incredible artworks celebrating the voices, talent and stories of Black British culture and its global impact.

Spanning from 1900 to the present day, the exhibition tells a long-overdue story of excellence, struggle, resilience and joy. From the origins of Black British music to the emergence of defining genres, including 2 tone, Brit funk, lovers rock, jungle, drum & bass, trip hop, UK garage and grime, the visitor is guided by the music.

Reality is__ friendssss 🫂

On the opening night of The Music is Black: A British Story at the V&A East Museum, we invited friends to experience the exhibition for the very first time.

Some stayed for more than two hours, some were dancing to songs they knew by heart, and others discovered an entirely new world they had never experienced before... it was a beautiful evening!

This musical bow from Zambia is among the oldest known stringed instruments in the world.

At The Music is Black: A British Story, you encounter this instrument as soon as you enter the exhibition, in Act 1, where we explore the origins of music. It appears again at the end of Act 3, after you’ve experienced the genres that were born in the UK and that together tell the story of Black British music, reconnecting the visitor to that very first instrument, where it all begins.

We used two-way mirrors to block views into Act 3 from Act 1 and to reflect the musical bow, while allowing visitors in Act 3 to look back into Act 1.
