“Baba amepita, na mwana amesimama.”

My children called him Baba. He chose that name intentionally. In Swahili and across the diaspora, Baba means the elder who carries the spirit of the family. The one who protects the lineage and holds the memory of who we are. So when my children said Baba, they were not just calling a grandfather. They were calling the root. They were calling the one who was already becoming an ancestor. And now he is. I will make sure they know what that means. I will make sure they know who they come from.

My father has transitioned. I am still learning how to carry that. Some moments he feels close. Some moments it feels like the world has gone quiet. Both are happening. I am grateful and I am hurting. Both can be true at the same time.

He was poised. Patient. Steady. He never needed to force anything. He never tried to impress the world. He knew who he was. I admired that, even when I was younger and didn’t have the language for it.

His last text to me said:

GM son, sending you Love and the quiet strength & resilience that is your birthright!! 💝👋🫡😊

I have read that text over and over. Birthright. As if he knew I would need to remember the ground I stand on. As if he knew I would need to feel him inside me when I could not call him anymore. There are moments I still reach for my phone. Grief moves slower than the mind.

He gave me grace when I was wrong. He checked me when I needed to straighten up. His love was consistency. Presence. Showing up. That was his language.

I am grateful for him. Some lessons only make sense when life opens you up. I see him in myself now. In how I breathe before reacting. In how I try to love my family with steadiness. In how I try to stand in who I am.

Being a father and a husband while holding ambition is sacred work. It stretches you. It humbles you. It breaks you open. My father was preparing me for that, even when I did not see it.

To my family. To my brothers. To everyone who loved my parents. Thank you. Your presence has held me.

I promise to carry you forward Dad. I love you and know you will always be with me. by @realjaywilliams

Money doesn’t change who you are.
It just speeds up the reveal.

You think it buys freedom…
But without direction?
It just funds confusion.

No one tells you:
It’s not the income that builds wealth.
It’s what you refuse to outsource —
your name, your choices, your mind.

Now be honest…
What would money expose in you right now? by @realjaywilliams
