Krishnakumar Kunnath, known simply as KK, was born on 23 August 1968 in Delhi and became one of India’s most beloved playback voices. He began with advertising jingles, singing over 3,500 jingles in 11 languages, before entering playback singing with A. R. Rahman in Tamil cinema and eventually making his Hindi breakthrough with “Tadap Tadap Ke” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. His 1999 debut album Pal, composed by Lesle Lewis, gave India “Pal” and “Yaaron”, songs that became timeless anthems of friendship, youth and farewell. Through the 2000s and 2010s, KK gave us “Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe”, “O Humdum Suniyo Re”, “Dola Re Dola”, “Dus Bahane”, “Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai”, “Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai”, “Aankhon Mein Teri”, “Ajab Si”, “Khuda Jaane”, “Zara Sa”, “Sajde”, “Piya Aaye Na”, “Mat Aazma Re”, “India Waale” and “Tu Jo Mila”, among countless others. His voice travelled across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Assamese and Malayalam, working with composers including A. R. Rahman, Lesle Lewis, Harris Jayaraj, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Pritam, Vishal-Shekhar, Himesh Reshammiya, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Mithoon, Vishal Bhardwaj, Vidyasagar, Mani Sharma and many more. He received six Filmfare nominations and won Screen Awards, including Best Male Playback Singer for “Khuda Jaane”. KK never built his identity around celebrity; his voice did the work. He sang romance, heartbreak, friendship, longing, rebellion and hope with an honesty that made millions feel understood. On 31 May 2022, after performing in Kolkata, KK passed away at 53. Yet his music never left. From Pal to Yaaron, Tadap Tadap to Khuda Jaane, Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai to Tu Jo Mila, KK didn’t merely sing the soundtrack of a generation; he became part of its memories.
