Thursday night soundcheck hits, ranked by how many people still think this is the actual set. 🎸🔊 Swipe for the official list.

Doors aren't open yet, but my ego is. Pour Some Sugar On Me and the house light guy already starts the cue, Shout at the Devil rattles the walls, and Wanted Dead or Alive is when I remember my voice is warmed up but my patience isn't. Rock and Roll All Nite during soundcheck should be illegal — and somehow security still thinks doors opened early.

38 years ago this week (Oct. 15, 1988) New Jersey hit #1 on the Billboard 200 — and held it for 4 weeks. Appetite was #2. Hysteria was #3. Even the Turnpike had traffic. 🎸🛣️

They wrote Bad Medicine. My band fills the prescription every Friday and still gets the rest-stop surcharge.

I've tried quieter exits. My gas receipts filed a noise complaint.

KISS Alive II turns 49 this month (October 1977). Two double-live albums in two years, because one was never going to be enough chaos. 🎆

My band has a live discography too. Alive I is set one at 9 PM: three people, and one of them is the bartender. Alive II is the 11:47 PM encore: "Detroit Rock City" again, confetti made from shredded bar napkins, and a bass solo nobody asked for. Total on the tab: one sequel. No refunds.

37 years ago today (Oct. 14, 1989) Dr. Feelgood hit #1 on the Billboard 200 — Motley Crue's only chart-topping album, and still the prescription my band fills every Friday night. 💊🎸

The doctor didn't leave a note. He left a tracklist. Side effects may include yelling "YEAH," leather pants becoming work clothes, and neighbors who keep calling for a second opinion.

I've tried quieter medicine. My bass amp rejected the refill.

44 years ago today (Oct. 13, 1982) KISS dropped "I Love It Loud," and I've been collecting noise complaints ever since. 🔊

My landlord taped a "TURN IT DOWN" notice to the practice room door tonight. I took it as a review. Then I cited KISS as legal precedent: the song is not called "I Tolerate It Medium." Play those drums quiet and it legally stops being the song. I tried once and my bass amp filed for emotional distress.

Verdict: guilty. Sentence: one more chorus, louder.

Day job until 5, rehearsal room at 7, and somehow I'm the only one who remembered the PA cables. Kickstart My Heart is the defibrillator, Youth Gone Wild reminds us we're still wild even if the youth clocked out years ago, and Photograph always ends in a 20-minute argument about who's singing the high harmony. (It's me. It's always me.)

Pulled over in the band van today. Bass amp in the back for ballast. Recorded speed: 52 in a 55 — uphill. Officer said, "Sir, you literally can't drive 55." Defense: Sammy warned you.

Happy birthday to Jeff Keith — Tesla's truck-driving frontman turns 68 today. 🎂🚛🎸

Before the arenas, the guy hauled freight. Then he hauled choruses. Working-class rock, no stretch limo required. As a bar-band frontman who also plays bass, I respect the hell out of that career path. My van still drives like a truck. Smells like one too.

Mile markers from the trenches:
🚛 Drove trucks before Tesla. Respect.
🎤 "Love Song" at last call — half the bar crying, half requesting Wonderwall. I play Tesla. The blender still wins the duet.
🪧 "Signs" still pays the rent. Modern Day Cowboy energy: show up, plug in, mean it.

Saturday I was screaming high notes in a bar. This morning I was answering emails with half my eyeliner still on. Kickstart My Heart is the only thing louder than my alarm, Livin' on a Prayer is basically my commute, and Working for the Weekend is a countdown clock, not a song.

38 years ago today, Poison dropped "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," their only No. 1, and Bret Michaels taught a whole generation of us that a power ballad starts with an acoustic guitar and a bad breakup. 🌹🎸

Reporting live from the bar-band trenches, I can confirm: every gig has its thorn.

🌹 Someone requests a power ballad. 🥀 It's "Wonderwall."
🌹 I nail the quiet acoustic intro. 🥀 So does the bartender's blender.
🌹 Got her number after the show. 🥀 She wanted the drummer's.
🌹 Bar pays the band in free drinks. 🥀 The van doesn't run on Jäger.
🌹 They screamed for one more. 🥀 It was last call.

And every bass player loads out his own sad, sad rig. That bass player is me.
