Six years ago today, I walked out of prison.

Not the prison I had known before—the one with bars, gates and concrete walls. This was a different prison. Addiction.

On October 3, 2020, I decided I was done with the booze, the drugs and the chaos that came with them. I needed to save my own life, but I also wanted to become an example for my children. I wanted them to know that your past may be part of your story, but it doesn’t have to determine how that story ends.

A lifetime has happened in the six years since. I’ve watched my older children become incredible adults. I’ve become a dad again and a granddad. I’ve built things, lost things, started over, reinvented myself, written my story and made movies trying to turn some of what I’ve lived through into something with purpose.

And through all of it, I think the thing I’ve really been searching for is peace.

Peace with where I’ve been. Peace with who I am. And the understanding that life isn’t measured only by our successes or failures. It’s measured in moments—the people we love, the time we get with them, and the fact that we’re still here to experience it.

I’m grateful for everyone who has loved me, prayed for me, challenged me, forgiven me or walked beside me along the way.

Six years free. And still becoming.

I’ve had seasons where I had everything I thought I needed, and seasons where I had almost nothing.

Funny thing is, some of my biggest changes came when I had less.

Less made me think differently. Create differently. Trust myself differently.

I’ve learned not to stare too long at what’s missing. Instead focus on what’s still in front of you. There’s usually a move there.

I spent years of my life behind prison walls. Never imagined one day I’d come back to a prison yard to make a movie.

Life is wild like that.

But the thing I’ve learned about filmmaking is that no matter whose story starts it, it takes a village to bring it to life.

Shoutout to every cast member, crew member, producer and person who showed up and believed in what we were creating.

16 months. Two feature films shot. Two films delivered.

This was July of last year, setting up the prison yard for Real Ones. I remember standing there thinking how strange life can be.

I spent years of my life behind walls like these. Years later, I came back—not as an inmate, but as a filmmaker, building a scene for a story I wrote about the life I survived.

At the time, I had no idea where any of this was going. I was making my first movie and learning as I went.

Now, 14 months later, we’re finishing our second feature.

Maybe the craziest part is that I had to go back to prison to make a movie before I realized I had finally stopped living in one.

Sometimes freedom isn’t walking out of the gate.
It’s becoming someone who never has to go back.

Back to Kansas City. 🎬

A few months ago, we came to KC to make a movie.

Now we’re coming back to talk about how we made it.

Excited to be joining the panel at the festival and sharing some of the journey behind Broken Ones — the challenges, the people, the lessons, and everything it took to bring this film to life.

Kansas City became a big part of this story, so it feels right to come back and celebrate with the community that helped us make it happen.
