An absolute honor getting to compete with @irinabobina at the @lindyfest strictly contest (and to get 🥈on top of that). Not just because it’s an opportunity to dance with such an incredible dancer, but more importantly, because it’s an opportunity to dance and share that memory with a best friend 🥹

We treated it as a typical social dance we usually share (which includes finger Charleston on the ground or round house kicks 😂 watch through the all skates for all that), with the added adrenaline of doing it in front of other folks.

Thank you Irina for always being an amazing source of inspiration, support, joy, and friendship 🩵🩵🩵

Drawing @frances.j.wolfe for the @saltcitystomp mix and match final was an absolute pleasure 😁 Doesn’t hurt that we brought home🥇Once @hothousewest_ started playing “Tea for Two” we were locked in.

Certainly a highlight of an incredible weekend!

Come learn more about the history and context of Lindy Hop and Jazz with @realsaltblake before Thursday classes on 7/16 and 7/23 at 6PM!

These presentations are a great jumping off point, or to add to your current knowledge, of these art forms. Of course, with it being less than two hours, there is no way to go into the depth necessary to discuss all of the context, history, and gray area involved. However, Blake will provide additional resources for you to spend more time learning.

Lindy Hop and Jazz come from Black American culture and communities. Let’s push ourselves to be more on the side of appreciating than appropriating these art forms!

Montreal was beautiful. Friends, coffee, pastries, gnocchi, sites, architecture, art, music, and of course dancing at @lindyhopchamps as well as randomly through the city.

Even though there was a little heat wave with humidity that caused me to be the sweatiest I’ve ever been, I had such a wonderful time.

Thank you Montreal. Thank you to those hosting. Thank you to the friends for the laughs, conversations, and dances. Thank you to the incredible dancers and teachers putting it out there to be inspiring. 🩵🩵🩵

In this two part Wednesday series, we’ll explore the evolution of Black American music and dance from Ragtime to Hip Hop, and everything in between, adapting Lindy Hop and solo movement across genres while learning the history and cultural context behind them.

✨ Prerequisite: Completed all level 1. We’re opening this class to current level 2 students for more access to the educational part of the series. Note that for those currently in level 2, the material will move faster and be more challenging.

✨ Pricing:
Series: $40 (Student/Active Military/65+ with ID $35)
Drop-in: $25

Utah Arts Fest - Rep Your Set

Some of the folks in our scene have been going to the occasional hip hop, krump, or funk class at Millennium and we have all been wanting to show the continuum that is Black dance. So when Blake asked us a month or so ago if we wanted to do a showcase of Lindy Hop to some hip hop music, at the Utah Arts fest, we all whole heartedly said yes!

As the group gathered this past week, we pieced together bits and pieces of some classic routines (Tranky Doo and California Routine notably) as well as staying true our roots with a jam circle and some improv. And of course some air had to be thrown!

Day of, we met downtown and I think most of us had no clue what we had gotten ourselves into. It wasn’t just a show case, it was a full blown choreo comp with some of the dancers we had been taking classes from at Millenium as well as many other extremely talented groups from around the state. As we watched the groups of practically professional dancers and choreographers go before us, we just decided to go out, have a blast, and literally “rep our set” the best we could. And while we didn’t bring home any prizes, I was so proud of how our group came together and performed something that we all love. We are so proud that we got to share it with the broader dance community here in Utah.

Thanks @realsaltblake for putting this together and organizing us all! Twas a hoot. Shout out to @1520arts for hosting such a fun event and celebrating individuality! @salt.city.swing gang really took over. by @realsaltblake

✨ Saw that @hannayanello and @lionhearthanna had also put together some incredible stuff to this song. For real, though. Go watch it!

✨ Made it happen at an alleyway in SLC where I’ve been wanting to do some dancing for a while.

Love the SLC Lindy Hop dance community! 🩵 Also, being thrown is so fun and Karson is incredible at it!

✨ Lindy Hop is from Black American culture and communities. The air step here has had multiple names, but “Round the back” is a common used one. You can see incredible examples of this air step from originators, and those who carried the torch, with Frankie Manning and Ann Johnson in the movie “Hellzapoppin’”, Norma Miller and George Greenidge at the 1938 Harvest Moon Ball, Joya Jaimes and Dickie Harris from Mama Lu Parks dance troupe, and much more.
