Remember this summer’s Equitable Dinners? We’re taking them on the road, to @ahntoday AHN’s various campuses! These lunch and learn-style events give staff and patients a chance to talk about health and nutrition through LIVE THEATER – – and get to know each other a little better in the process. We had a great time at the Center for Inclusion Health today! Want to bring this model to your business or community gathering? Let us know! #lunchandlearn by @realtimearts

We took a lot of photos and videos on our trip to Ukraine, especially in Lviv-- the hometown of our lead collaborator on "there is a blue", @frazefrazenko. We gave Oleksandr our footage and asked him to make videos for you. So he's seeing his hometown through our eyes; and then we're seeing it through his.

PS: Did you know that LOT Polish Airlines filmed their airline safety video in their National Museum? Both classy and a little unsettling!

Stay tuned for more.

While visiting Ukraine and Poland, we took two days to fling ourselves to Venice Italy for the Biennale for some serious inspiration.

This piece by Klara Kristalova was part of the Nordic Countries exhibition, and was "inspired by Nordic folklore, fairytales and stories such as the Kalevala - the 19th-century creation epic of Finland and Karelia - but resonating beyond" (Kristalova's website).

This piece, with its folk creatures emerging from, hiding in and gathering around a woman's body, which also happens to be a tree, stopped us in our tracks. It resonates HARD with our work on our upcoming "there is a blue that only children see" (feb 2027), that fuses Ukrainian folklore with veteran stories. The mystery, the impish humor, the body fusing with past and potential future-- all these sang to us from Kristalova's piece.

🇺🇦🇺🇸 RealTime Arts: коли спільний досвід долає відстань

RealTime Arts

RealTime Arts — це не лише про мистецтво. Це про людей, які стають ближчими 👥

Another photo dump from Lviv Ukraine— what a beautiful city. The sense of normalcy and everyday pleasure are quiet acts of rebellion. Cat cafes, twinkling lights, coffee shops. The statues on the National Opera house are wrapped in black for safekeeping, but even the hotel curtains are covered with vibrant folk stories. #lviv #ukraine #realtimearts #thereisabluethatonlychildrensee taken in Lviv, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine by @realtimearts

We returned from Ukraine to face the shock and grief of losing a steadfast partner for the last two years: Father John Charest of St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church @stspeterpaulcarnegie in Carnegie, who died unexpectedly on August 11.

Those of you who came to Free Ourselves from Stone last November may remember him as the Father who gave the blessing beginning the meal (that his wonderful wife @laryssa.charest made for our audiences). They welcomed this odd but earnest theater project into their church with no hesitation.

Fr. Charest was deeply generous, kind, and funny. The first time we met him was at a winter service in the beautiful gilded chapel. After leading the service in Ukrainian (by candlelight? This is how I remember it), full of mystery and wonder, he could sense our fascination and drew us up to the altar to explain the role of iconography in his faith, and the origin of the gilded figures on the wall of the chapel.

In later meetings he helped us understand the meaning and process of creating pysanky, intricately-designed Ukrainian Easter eggs, and led us through the church's museum/ archive of local Ukrainian history with that infectious mix of reverence, welcome and enthusiasm.

You could sense gave his whole heart to his faith, his vocation, and his family, who are of course suffering deeply at this time. He also led his congregation in contributing tirelessly to the cause of Ukrainian sovreignty.

His spirit and memory are embedded in the play we're creating. We will do our best to honor his kindness and reverence in our continued work.

While in Lviv, we lit a candle for Fr. John in the Armenian Cathedral. While not a Ukrainian Orthodox church, the mural for fallen defenders and the gazes of the Saints on the gilded walls brought to mind that first meeting with John.

Actually, we didn't have money to buy a candle, as Lviv's ATM's refused us Ukrainian cash; a stranger bought the candle for us, one of those an angel-strangers you encounter now and then.

Fr. John, may your memory be eternal. Peace and comfort to your family and congregation. by @realtimearts
