#Ad I’ve spent a lot of years climbing ice, and one thing I’ve learned is that ice climbing is pretty hard on gear.

Ice, rock, sharp tools, cold belays, wet conditions. Eventually, things wear out.

For me, that’s a lot more interesting than pretending gear will last forever. It won’t. What matters is whether it can be repaired, kept in use, and taken back into the mountains.

That thinking is built into the @arcteryx Sperro SV. It’s designed with repair in mind, so when something gets damaged or worn through use, ReBIRD can help extend its life and keep it in use longer.

I like that approach. Build gear to be used, take care of it, repair it when you can, and keep using it.

Makes sense to me.

The journey ends on ice.⁣
⁣
@hughnewall and @realwillgadd make their final stop at Blue Lake, in the Main Range of Kosciuszko National Park — one of the very few places in Australia that reliably forms climbable ice. A glacial cirque formed thousands of years ago, reached on ski from Guthega, with routes that only come into condition for a short window each winter.⁣
⁣
This is the answer to the question most people assume is a joke: yes, you can ice climb in Australia.⁣

From sandstone to the sea cliffs at the mouth of Jervis Bay, NSW.⁣
⁣
Next stop: Point Perpendicular.⁣
⁣
Access is by abseil from the clifftop, so you commit to the route before you've even seen it from below. Swell breaks against the cliffs as whales swim by beneath you, making for one of Australia's most unique climbing experiences.⁣
⁣
Arc'teryx Ambassadors @hughnewall and @realwillgadd explore a landscape where every descent is the beginning of the climb.⁣

From sandstone walls to sea cliffs and rare alpine ice — Ambassador @hughnewall takes @realwillgadd to explore the diversity of Australian climbing.⁣
⁣
First stop: the sandstone of the Blue Mountains, an hour west of Sydney and the country's best-known climbing region. Escarpment walls, eucalypt valleys, and rock that looks nothing like the limestone and ice Will spends his winters on.⁣

Will Gadd Podcast | Episode 33

DESIRE & HONESTY for SELF-IMPROVEMENT

In this podcast, Kevin Roet speaks with climber Will Gadd about his path into technical mixed and ice climbing. Shaped by growing up in a mountaineering community and witnessing the risks first hand. They discuss the uncertainty of the mountains and how fear, when respected, serves as a vital tool for survival rather than a limitation.

Will highlights the importance of education and awareness in managing risk. Also framing fear not as something to avoid, but as something to understand and use effectively.

The conversation also explores building a “try-hard” mindset as a trainable skill.
