Did you know a tight shoulder actually starts in your feet? 🕵️‍♂️

When this client got on the reformer, Footwork was the very first exercise we did.

Before he even touched a strap, we notice a subtle structural reality in his feet and knees: he is naturally a little bow-legged. 🦵

When a skeleton is mildly bow-legged, the knees naturally bow outward. To find a flat, stable connection on the footbar, the body automatically compensates by rolling the ankles and twisting the hips inward just to find the ground.

An untrained eye skips past Footwork and just sees it as a basic warmup. But years of experience teach you that a twist at the bottom always travels to the top. 🔄

Look at the next photos: Before he even pulled the straps for Chest Expansion, that lower-body twist was already affecting his alignment, with a visible shoulder length discrepancy at rest.

And once he put the straps under load, the full chain reaction showed up:
❌ His right shoulder hiked straight up toward his ear.
❌ His head shifted and tilted heavily to the right.

The shoulder hike and head tilt weren’t a shoulder problem. They were a direct consequence of the compensation pattern we saw in his very first set of Footwork. His upper back was trying to act as a “fake anchor” for his twisted lower body.

We used targeted myofascial release to calm his shoulder down. But to make that relief permanent, we had to go straight back to his foundation. We moved into targeted glute work to support his hips, and reintroduced his footwork using a small ball between his knees to teach his legs to track straight over his toes. But that was just the beginning. We can’t change a structure, but we can work with its compensations and strengthen its weaknesses.

If you notice your lower back arches aggressively or hollows out when you’re standing around or making coffee, your body may have picked up a movement habit that keeps reinforcing the same pattern just from sitting.

Modern sports science shows when we sit for hours, our hip flexors, including the psoas, remain in a shortened position. Over time, this can influence how the pelvis moves and how the lower back is held.

Add in shoulders creeping forward, and these patterns can become part of how we habitually carry ourselves.

After 27 years of watching bodies move, I can tell you that the magic isn’t in sweating through a million repetitions or clinical sales pitches. It’s in these tiny, intentional resets that help us become aware of old patterns and develop better body mechanics to get us through everyday life.

We laugh (of course because it’s all fun) we become aware, we feel where we are in any position, we change the pattern, and we keep moving.

I love fall. I crave it every single year. The smells, the food, the air…..

But I wouldn’t want it to be fall all year. I’d miss the colors and tastes and smells of cherries, kiwis, berries, grapefruit and more.

From a Michelin star Japanese meal in Tokyo to the Sujeonggwa tea in Seoul I miss, to the farmers markets in NY and Vermont that are always home to the grapes Douro valley masters, it’s endless what we can use it for.

And that’s part of what I love about eating with the seasons. Different fruits bring different nutrients, flavors, and ways to add variety to how we nourish our bodies.

It’s not so different from exercise. We wouldn’t want to do only one type of movement all year and expect it to meet every need.

Strength, mobility, Pilates, recovery- each has a place in a healthy lifestyle.

Because taking care of ourselves isn’t about just how we move.

It’s how we fuel our bodies too.

It’s a lifestyle- the combination of what we do, what we eat, and how we live that works together.

The work is creating a class where everyone is a winner.

Every body is beautifully different. Each one has their own needs, experience, restraints and goals.

How do you make sure each gets their best workout?

We build pillars and foundations to build on so each person has what they need to succeed regardless of what level they are today in class.

The beginners build.
The advanced climb.
Everyone gets to be a star. by @rebalancengp

Three days of movement, learning, connection, fun and energy.

After all of these years doing this work, I’m still grateful to be in a room with amazing people who care so deeply about the work, continuing to learn, always evolving and educating themselves and others.

Thank you, The Pilates Journal for bringing us together 🤍 by @rebalancengp

SMP”….Social media procrastinator.

That’s me.

I just spent days surrounded by people I admire. Learning, moving, talking, laughing, doing the work I love.

And I posted absolutely nothing. 😂

Turns out I’m not alone, apparently there’s a whole club of us.

Here’s my truth: Instagram is a time stealer, and I’d rather give my time to real life than a screen. Face to face over face to screen, every time. Some of the best moments never make it here, because I was too busy actually living them.

So yes. I’m an SMP.

Are you one too?

Not every change needs to be figured out before you begin. Sometimes you know it’s time to move forward before you know where to or what comes next. by @rebalancengp

Studios like this have been so much more than a place to work. They have been a sanctuary— a place where I have learned, grown, performed, taught, and discovered my own strength.

But they have also been a place where I have watched others grow in ways that have stayed with me. Strength returning after injury. Confidence coming back. Bodies transforming. People discovering what they are capable of and appreciating their beautiful bodies.

For so many years, these walls have held the quiet and long hours of hard work, focus, frustration, progress and joy — mine and theirs.

I’m incredibly proud of the work built across all of the studios, and grateful for all the years and moments these spaces have given me and the special people who have inspired me.

After all this time, walking into a studio still feels like coming home. by @rebalancengp

There is a lot of noise out there.

New methods, new exercises, new programs. And a lot of what already works.

We customize a client, not generalize.

The plan is consistent, not sporadic.

Accountability is shared.

Trust the process. The results speak for themselves.

Some of the biggest changes don’t begin with a plan.

Sometimes they begin with a pause.

A moment to look at where you’ve been, what you’ve learned, what still matters — and what you want to make room for next.

After 25 years of working with people, movement and wellness, I’ve learned that growth isn’t always about doing more.

Sometimes it’s about paying closer attention.

To your body.

To your life.

To what is working.

And to what may need to change.

Growth can be quiet. Change can be intentional.

And sometimes, the next chapter begins before you can see exactly what it will look like.
