Rebecca Davis (@rebeccadavis) started taking candid photographs on the subway in 2012, while working as a video producer for the @nydailynews. Back then, print reporters got company cars to drive from one story to the next; the digital team had to use their unlimited Metrocards. 📰📉😟

“Often I would sit across from someone and maybe take like 10 or 12 frames until I captured in the photo tradition what would be considered the ’decisive moment,’” she said. “But I was realizing as I went back into my photo gallery to look and pick the photos at the end of a day that there was this flipbook effect as I would run through them.” So she made the year’s pictures in a flipbook-style video called Commuters.

She talks about her subway photography with @bdeskin on the @metropolitanfaces podcast.

I’m saying bye to my iPhone for the month of November as part of Month Offline (https://offline.community)! My calls will still forward here, but anyone out there (friends or strangers!) who wants to give me a ring directly on my flip, I welcome calls at this number for the next 30 days and happy to chat about the dumb phone life…or just life! ✨📞✨ by @rebeccadavis

🎧 New Rough Cut episode! Guest host Caitlin Boyle chats with filmmaker @rebeccadavis about the making of Join or Die — a timely documentary about America’s deep need for community, featuring Robert Putnam’s “Bowling Alone” research.

From community screenings to a Netflix release and Oscar-qualifying theatrical run, the team behind the film crafted an intentional, grassroots campaign that practiced what the film preached — centering real engagement over mass exposure.

This episode offers an honest look at the strategy and heart that goes into building authentic impact for documentaries, and how to get people to care about the message of your film.
