Ngā mihi nui for all the birthday wishes. I wondered if I might be a bit fragile, turning 50 while unemployed and not doing anything particularly important to a wider world. But I’m quite overwhelmed by all the love, warmth and connection I’ve received. a wonderful reminder that the relationships you have are so much more important than what you ‘do’. Ageing is the greatest privilege there is and I’m so grateful for the chance to do so, made even more special by the fact I get to do it with every single one of you 💜🎂. Ps: @anttimpson and I WILL be having a joint party later in the year - be ready! by @rebeccatimpson

Dispatch from the most incredible solo long weekend in my favourite place on earth, where the whenua and the moana have provided me the fortitude to (hopefully) smash out my final chemo session on Wednesday and head into the (hopefully) final phase of my JOURNEY (surgery) Whoop!!!! by @rebeccatimpson

Today we celebrate the greatness that is @anttimpson who is SIXTY today omg.
👴🏻🥳🎬
My partner in crime, my biggest support. Anyone who has ever met Ant or just shared a creative interest with him (there are so many of you) will know that he would drop anything for anyone to see an interesting perspective be brought to life. Those who have experienced this are so lucky, but I am the luckiest because I get to live with this everyday.
🥰💜
His ability to go from grumpy man yelling at the state of the world (or a wrong answer on The Chase) to dropping everything to help someone - or an animal - achieve fulfillment is just so cool. Somehow I am stumped for words today but please join me in wrapping Ant in so much aroha that words don’t matter.
🤍🤍🤍
We’ve loved each other nearly half our lives. It’s exhilarating to be with someone who can’t abide mediocre. We live and love hard and it’s the best. I have the best feeling about your 60th year..... It’s going to be so full of personal and professional adventures... We are just getting started.

I first met @iamzoewalker 20 years ago when she was Stacy Gregg’s intern, highly recommended by her tutor at the AUT journalism school. One of Zoe’s greatest superpowers has been knowing when to give up what no longer serves her, and years later when she walked away from a plum job at Viva I dreamt of being able to work together on our own project. The timing wasn’t right then, but as you all know when Bauer media folded, taking her role of editor in chief of FQ with it, fate and a shit tonne of hard work brought us together for the experience of a lifetime. As the sun officially sets on @ensemblemagazinenz this week I’d like to acknowledge my ride or die partner, an unparalleled editor and writer who had a clear vision for Ensemble she never strayed from. With razor sharp instincts and an unerring eye for talent she gave a voice and a platform to things our readers wanted to know about, often before they knew they did. Annoyingly stubborn (she cannot be peer pressured don’t even try) and with a steely strength that belies her twee demeanour, Zoe is truly in this business for you - the readers and creatives - and not her ego, a very rare thing indeed. Ngā mihi Zoe for being a leader, inspiration, mentor and friend to so many. And for doing the boring admin wind up of our beloved business alone when my world got wobbly. Love you forever and ever 💜🎀🦭🦄✍️🎀💜 by @rebeccatimpson

When we launched, we introduced our #EnsembleCast of contributors and friends wearing their #BestEnsemble. We're ending in that same collective spirit, by celebrating some of the people who shaped five years of Ensemble 💜

Rebecca Wadey (@rebeccatimpson) is Ensemble's co-founder and partnerships director, although that title doesn’t even begin to convey everything that she did and brought to this project: brand champion, one of NZ's cleverest writers and the only wellbeing editor worth reading, public speaker when Zoe was too shy, blue sky thinker, epic event and party thrower and a woman who managed to make selling things feel soulful (even though she hated that part). Ensemble would not have existed without her unstoppable energy, generous spirit and infectious sense of fun.

Every day I give thanks to have this amazing person in my life, but I am extra grateful to the universe for delivering her to my door for the past two weeks. Anyone that knows @mettemarie_k knows that the sun shines wherever she goes (despite her love of snow and cold), and I have been extraordinarily lucky to have been able to bathe in that warmth IRL when I needed it most. She is proof that friendship and connection transcends borders (and languages!).

For those who don’t know, Zoe and I had been texting each other random terrible names for this new venture we were starting in 2020. I woke up to a text from Mette-Marie one morning that said simply, Ensemble. I texted Zoe, ‘Ensemble’. And that was us. To have her visiting as we dimmed the lights was uncanny timing, plus she got to meet a couple of my amazing medical team.

I love her with all my heart. Her and her incredible family have provided untold joy, sunlight and laughter to us at a time when we needed a little TLC.

I can’t wait to be all fixed so we can continue our international culinary, sauna, singing, dancing and hugging adventures in 2026.💜❤️‍🩹💖💝😭🎀🦄🧚🏻💜 by @rebeccatimpson

Ensemble took its first breath on Vincent’s 11th birthday, and sent its last newsletter today, Tobias’s 18th birthday. It’s been the most amazing ride and I’m so proud of everything we did. But I’ll save that for tomorrow. Today I am revelling in having my boys with me (including Ant) and having more time with them over the next few months while doing my treatment. Bring on summer and chill. And happiest of birthdays to you @tobyytimpson you are so fucking great I adore you 💗 by @rebeccatimpson

“This story has been on the content calendar all year. In there it was titled ‘How to Poo Good’ and I planned to take you, dear readers, on a journey with me as I sorted my ‘gut health’ and sifted through the plethora of products marketed to a menopausal woman promising to alleviate my bloating, gas, constipation and diarrhea, researching along the way to see what worked (for me) and what was snake oil.”

💜Haere rā from Ensemble 💜

Some news from us: We have decided it’s time for Ensemble to take its final bow.

This five-year project has been the most rewarding of our careers, and we’re immensely proud of the business and platform we have built together. But there is integrity in knowing when something has come to a natural end – and when it’s time to leave the party.

From day one, we promised honesty, and we’ll hold to that here. Over the past year of independent (again) ownership, we’ve poured all our energy into adapting and refining what Ensemble could realistically be. But maintaining the standards that we hold for ourselves, and the Ensemble brand, is no longer sustainable – emotionally, financially or creatively.

Coincidentally (we promise!), shortly after we’d made this decision, life reminded us we’d made the right call – and of the importance of winding things down authentically and gently. But still with some cake, dairy flowers and messy fun 🍰💐

THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who has supported us over these five years: readers, our team past and present, contributors, advertisers, subscribers, friends, family, collaborators, our community.

Above all, we want to thank each other – and acknowledge the gift of working together, which has been at the whimsical heart of Ensemble since the beginning 🎀

We’re not quite done yet: next week we’ll publish some farewell stories and share highlights from the archive too.

Ensemble forever,
Rebecca and Zoe by @rebeccatimpson
