ENTERTAINING CIRCUS SPECTACULAR Come Alive @comealiveaus

The ultimate talent is to understand a classic and the craft enough to undo and redo. And so it is in music theatre that director Richard Carroll is the Grand Poo Bah.

The Hayes Theatre Co. bang up PIRATES OF PENZANCE is on again - but this time at the Foundry Theatre (the intimate old stage loading area behind the STAR Lyric).

The excessively polite, incessantly rhyming, G&S rapid firing is retained but shaken out of the 19th century with modern upshots. So too is the original topsy turvy satire on the rigidity of society.

The 2025 cast of The Pirate King @jaylagaaia Ruth AND Mabel @brittanie_shipway and Frederic @onemaxwellsimon has new crew members @rrumharas @jonathonguy and @tanalagaaia

There are so many clever little references at every moment, even in the choreography, to make this intellectually stimulating, yet you might be already giggling and guffawing too much to notice 'em all.

This once 5 star Hayes comic canon blows us out of the water with a reprise 11 out of 10. A riotous catchy confection. The very model of a modern musical triumph. Go watch it - once, twice or thrice!!! Gilbert & Sullivan was never finer.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

Travelling throughout Australia, one highlight is to visit the Silo Art Trail. On the Liverpool Plains in NSW we love My Country - the second stanza of the iconic poem by Dorothea Mckellar - at this Gunnedah silo. Nearby at Quindiri, the daytime silo art also turns into a light and sound show by night.

On our recent road trip, our pick of places to eat in the area was lunch at the home of country music Tamworth at @hopscotchrestaurant with its friendly service and innovative tasty approach to fresh local food.

BARBRA The Greatest Star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ kicks Hayes Theatre 2026 off with a blast in yet another Hayes 5 star show.

A truly brilliant light that we all need right now in the world, an inspirational tribute with harmonies, solos, an onstage band and a sumptious draped and floral set.

Conceived and directed by the passionate @brittanie_shipway and also starring @laurashannonmurphy @stellarperry @tanalagaaia and musical director @nickgentile21 each bringing their own unique star qualities to this outstanding performance.

Songs include Hello Dolly, Funny Girl, Don't Rain On My Parade, The Way We Were, Evergreen and many more.

How do you squeeze 2 Academy Awards, 10 Grammys, 5 Emmys, 9 Golden Globes, 37 studio albums, and in total over 80 albums when you count studio, live, compilations and soundtracks - into 75 minutes?

Thoughtfully arranged and performed with so much pizzazz, power and presence I'm sure M. Streisand would be proud. She'd love the touches of humour too, I'm sure.

And here, at the @hayestheatreco_official of 111 seats, gives the performances intimacy, with a spirit and an appreciation unrivalled in previous tribute shows.

I've only ever loved anything anything anytime I've seen at Hayes. Be quick if you want any of the remaining BARBRA seats.

For a little bit of added Barbra Streisand trivia, did you know that when my flatmate put on a Barbra drag tribute show Barbra Beige and the Beigettes, I was one of the Beigettes - backup singers? Must have been more than 30 years ago now..

Stephen Sonheim and my Review of a Revue - 'Putting it Together' @foundrytheatresydney opening night.

Wonderfully witty. Enormously entertaining. Fabulous fun!

Stunning all white luscious set. Black evening wear and sparkling sequins for elegant contrasts in costuming. Trifecta staging win from the erudite lighting.

With the hugely talented cast flawlessly executing every movement, note, harmony, gesture, expression. A cast of stars, all with commanding presence, songster showmanship and perfect comedic timing.

Congratulations Cameron Mitchell for transporting classic Sondheim into 2026 Sydney with such aplomb!

The best of 2026? Yes! The musical year is definitely off to a grand start. And, if the year brings any show better, 2026 will be a very grand year indeed. On now only until 15 Feb. taken in Foundry Theatre by @rebeccavaridel

💚 GreenUps celebrating 2010 until now...

Still holding in my heart the community of GreenUps! Thanks to @jessmillersydney and @cityofsydney for hosting the 2025 reunion. So good to see you Jess and all!

might not have got the climate outcomes we had hoped for back then but good to stand in this community. To stand on common ground.

#greenups was an early social media meetup on Gadigal Country (Sydney). Had a chance last night to catch up with ethical supplier Grant @featherandboneprovidore who provided an early meetup venue, and ideas man Dave who created my media challenge (radio, blog, twitter - in the days before instagram) to eat only local 25 mile produce for a week and publish my daily diary. GreenUps was also my first speaking presentation way back then on environmental sustainability in food. Wonderful to have the greats - Indira and Costa and more also in the group.

📽 AMAZING FILM !!! with *WARNING*

Watched the new film NUREMBERG this week!

a career best to date for Rami Malek brilliant in his role as the US Army psychiatrist, and

Russell Crowe is superb (but nothing will beat his acting in Beautiful Minds).

The *warning* on this must see film, there is (and of course should be) footage from concentration camps.

This storytelling is profound. Film making outstanding. Only in cinemas. Thank you for the preview invitation.
