Conceived by the British painter Daniel Sturgis, On the Thick and Thin of Painting explores the
materiality of the medium, its physical and ethereal boundaries, and the enduring subculture of abstraction.

The exhibition is framed as a visual dialogue between nine artists’ work, where the title refers to how each artist navigates the formal and conceptual densities of paint. Whether applied with full-bodied gusto, delicate slightness, or felt through its absence, the “thick and thin” of the exhibition’s title serves as a metaphor for how each artist uses an idea of paint to position their work against art history, the contemporary moment, and the belief in painting as a critical and durable medium.

Cross Lane Projects has commissioned a catalogue featuring an essay by Martin Holman to
accompany the exhibition.

To be shelved can refer to objects, people, or ideas that have been left behind, forgotten, or set aside. However, it can also speak to things that are carefully stored, awaiting a future moment of relevance or a space of reverence and presentation. These contrasting positive and negative readings serve as a central motif for the show.

The shelf has long fascinated writers and thinkers. Foucault saw it as an “ordered surface,” while Bachelard cast it as an extrovert compared to the drawer—a vertical element that organizes space from the grounded and practical to the elevated and imaginative. For Perec, shelves mapped the domestic psyche and for Walter Benjamin, they marked a pause in Unpacking My Library, when books are “not yet touched by the mild boredom of order”. As a result, the shelf is embedded in our cultural vocabulary: on the shelf (set aside or neglected), off the shelf (ready-made), shelf life (a measure of consumables and ideas).

It is formal space that change’s function and reading depending on domestic, commercial or institutional settings. Domestically it can act as an altar where each placement is deliberate, a transformational space when a functional object can be turned into art. Institutionally it can be closed or restrictive (archive) or an open stack (lending library) recoding the shelf from vault to marketplace. Commercially it provides desired prime real estate for the golden zoned merchandise at eye level.

The artist’s selected for this show refer to the ideas/themes of being shelved through a variety of approaches, those working with institutional archives (@bob__matthews , @markharrisworks ), personal collections (@leighclarkeartist, @elliewyatt_ ), and the presentation and materiality of art and everyday objects (@stellawhalley, @joaddisonartist , @adustymiller, @f_drayson, @michaelsamuels_ ).

Rebecca Scott ‘Amnesia’, 2012-2025, Oil on canvas, 50x40cm

Rebecca writes: This work derived from taking images found in Women’s fashion magazines, usually Vogue, then defacing each page. The first magazine I blocked out all the text, taking away such a large feature almost redesigns it, and it becomes more of a sketchbook. The second magazine I doodled and scribbled my way through the pages, a deliberate and spontaneous reaction to the formatted pages. From there I began redrawing the models I saw in the magazines, often reimagining the models as nudes, this action reminded me of the raw genital doodles you often find on graffitied walls; a puerile and mischievous action, often yielding interesting visual results. There is a juxtaposition and tension between the drawn image and the photographic, which I find visually challenging. My drawings with scribbles are spontaneous whereas the photographs are meticulously planned and created.

Felt not Thought…Works on Paper began with an introduction to the works by Anthony Corner through VeniceArtFactory. Corner had been working with them for several years. Through a collaboration with VeniceArtFactory, Shh…what’s that? was exhibited in Vestry St. in 2024. Here the works were taped to the gallery walls, by removing the frame, there is an instant fragility, the barrier between the viewer and the work becomes intimate and approachable.

The title Felt not Thought is taken from an essay and dialogue with Corner’s paintings which will be released alongside the exhibition, written by Professor Michael Banissy. For curator Rebecca Scott, it acted as a starting point, a spectrum. On one end we have “felt”, spontaneity and intuitiveness, and the opposite end we have “thought”, rational thinking and/or conceptual thinking....
