My first vacation without baby and I’ve been pumping and freezing throughout the week. I couldn’t bear to throw away my breastmilk. All those hours, sleepless nights, hours sanitizing breast pump parts would have gone to waste. What are your thoughts? Should breast milk be excluded in carry on weight limit ?

To clarify, 20kg was a carry on luggage (that included 6kg of milk + 7kg pumps/ice packs ) and personal items (7kg) combined. 7 kg is the weight limit for carry on luggage + personal item bag (there wasn’t a max weight stated on the site for this).

In addition, although the luggage check in team from the SeaTac airport representing sia was not understanding with the situation of carrying extra pumps (which are medical devices and shouldn’t be part of baggage weight limit) and Bm (which on the site did say the limit to this was 6kg on carry on), the crew on board were incredibly nice and accommodating with helping me store my milk after the first meal was served. Most notably, Mabel Chin, Huang Pin-Hsin and Alyssa Hassim on SQ 27 on 25 May went above and beyond to assist with pumping on board and placing the milk in the coldest part of the chiller. Mabel was so sweet to offer more nuts and water as she is a mother of a 5 year old and went through the whole bf journey as well.

Hopefully this post can spark more conversations around breastfeeding mothers travelling without a child. Even though 6kg of milk is allowed under the section of travelling with an infant or baby, there is little to no information about what the limit is , if any , for mothers travelling without a child. If 6kg (equivalent to 6l) of milk is allowed on board for mothers with a baby, why can’t this be extended to bf mothers traveling without a baby? For reference, my baby needs about 1 l of milk in a 24 hour span. Since the airline allows milk for baby in an amount that can go beyond just the time spent on board, why can’t a bf mother travelling without a baby have the same benefit?
