PON DI ROAD | Mosaic: A surface decoration made by inlaying small pieces of variously colored material to form pictures or patterns.

Blessed to be a man of many cultures. Many have made me, and I embrace my mosaic: The global spectrum of lineage. Turning tragedy into triumph. Gullah, Afro-Caribbean, African. Trans-Atlantic tings dat.

Yesterday was a celebration honoring the Caribbean branches of the Mighty Tree! Much love always to Montserrat 🇲🇸 (couldn’t find a flag 😭), St. Vincent & the Grenadines 🇻🇨, Barbados 🇧🇧, Jamaica 🇯🇲, and the entire Caribbean community! Also, had to rep the Motherland - shoutout to @veryafricanglobal for the fire trucker hat!

To my Continental and Diasporian family, Happy Belated International People of African Descent Day! We must endeavor to keep our histories and heritages alive!

To my fellow Asante People, and all the Akan family, Happy Belated Akwasidae! Ghana’s indelible mark continues to be left on the world! ⚔️

And lastly, we must keep our cultural institutions alive, so if you are able, please visit the page of the @theafricacentre and donate to the GoFundMe in their bio!

Peace and blessings my people, until the next one! ✌🏿✊🏿

WE BACK! Sorry for the hiatus yet again - I will get into why I went off the grid in my next video, which is part 2 to this and dropping soon!

Before getting into that, I just had to start with giving Ghana its flowers, I genuinely didn’t want to leave, my Dad and I had an unforgettable time - one which has left an indelible mark on my life - I’ll never be the same! Many thanks to @awaytoafrica for curating our return home and @rashida_m_p for being a spectacular guide! 🇬🇭✊🏿

REC•LA•MA•TION: The act or process of reclaiming, such as - reformation, rehabilitation, restoration to use: recovery. To demand to obtain or the return & possession of something.

My Akan Name: NANA - King | KWESI - Born on Sunday | AGYEMAN - Savior of a Nation.

Being of Akan descent myself - our naming ceremony on Emancipation Day was the penultimate moment of our journey. For some, the naming ceremony may be treated as a novel experience that is just an event on the Emancipation Day program, but for me it was very sacred. Especially considering that King Kweku and the community was mourning the loss of his younger brother, hence why they were all wearing black instead of white. Truly the duality of death and rebirth.

Names play an essential role in all Indigenous African traditions. Based on a name, the ethnic group one belongs to, and where they are from, is identified, and deeper than that, is the enduring story of their bloodline. African names also have deep spiritual meanings, connecting to God and to life purpose. As descendants of enslaved Africans, today, we carry the names of the Europeans who enslaved our Ancestors. They knew that by simply removing our names, they were stripping us of thousands of years of family history, culture, and purpose. That’s how you psychologically break a human being and brainwash generations. Whitewashing isn’t just done to history books, it began with removing our Indigenous names, calling them “demonic”, and branding us with the European names we carry today.

I may never know the names of my Ancestors - but the name I was given was made for me and I will carry it with pride. To have it tied to the mission and prophesy of Marcus Garvey, whom I am a follower of, made being reinstated into Akan society more special. It also validates my creation of @reclamation.nation! Many thanks to Nana Kweku Iture V, paramount of the Eku-Na Nsona Royal family of Elmina and the elders for conducting our ceremony, and to the community for giving us a warm welcome and embracing us! Thanks again to @awaytoafrica and @rashida_m_p for making it happen! #ghana #akan #elmina #africa #africandiaspora #reclamationeraparadigm taken in Elmina, Ghana by @reclamation.nation

GHANA IN MOTION 🇬🇭

Photos alone wouldn’t have done this first pilgrimage to Africa, to one of the homelands of my Ancestors, justice - I had to capture the RHYTHM. From dawn to dusk, #Ghanaians are on the move - a language I understand very well and resonate strongly with.

The movement of people carried my Ancestors out of #Ghana during the Maafa, and after 400 years, a Spiritual desire for movement brought me back HOME, as it has for so many of us from the #AfricanDiaspora wherever we are.

An ode to the Warrior Nation, an ode to #Africa, and an ode to Daddy Lumba, who passed away during my journey. It’s only been a week and I miss being there already, I understand why many stay. Thank you @awaytoafrica and @protourafrica @rashida_m_p for curating this return! 🙏🏿⚔️🇬🇭 #beautifulafrica #accra #capecoast #visitghana @beyondthereturn @ghanatourismauthority by @reclamation.nation

This project has been a long time coming. The personal journey of working up the courage to get in front of a camera and speak, as an introverted writer, has gone hand in hand with the identity and ideology journey that I’ve been on. 😅

Growing up in America, all we know in most homes and all we are taught in all schools is that our known history begins with our enslaved Ancestors. Anything prior to that is unknown. We are aware that they were brought here from Africa - but Africa is packaged and presented to us as this distant, “uncivilized”, “primitive”, and “ungodly” place. We are conditioned to be ashamed of our Africanness aka Blackness, and are indoctrinated to believe that we are not Africans. It’s covertly inferred that enslavement was a favor, a salvation. These beliefs couldn’t be farther from the truth.

It wasn’t until I rediscovered my family’s lineages, 95% of which leads back to several regions, many countries, and ethnic groups across the African Continent, that I was able to find peace. I realized that though my family had been removed - who we’ve been for thousands of years never was. I found home in the ethnic groups I’m a part of, the history and cultures, and in the incredible people from the Motherland and Diasporas that I’ve been able to learn from and build kinships with. Being Gullah via South Carolina through my Father, broadly Caribbean through my Mother, and African above all, I found home in the spectrum of my cultural and genetic identity.

However, with that inner peace and self assurance, came a newfound awareness and sensitivity towards the suffering and hardship of African people. Peace shrouded in rage masked behind a calm demeanor seems like an oxymoron, but it’s the best way I can describe how I feel daily. I realized that all of our stories weren’t so different, despite our distance. I also realized that the solutions to our collective problems lie in securing our Anchor, our Motherland, regardless of where we live. We owe that to those who sacrificed their lives to get us here. It’s with that understanding that the Reclamation Era was birthed. #africa #africandiaspora #africanunity #panafricanism #reclamationeraparadigm by @reclamation.nation
