Zwischen Original und Digitalisat liegt einiges an Technik: kalibrierte Geräte, kontrollierte Lichtbedingungen, konsequentes Farbmanagement mit ICC-Profilen. Fehlt eines davon, driftet jede Kopie vom Original ab. by @recomartcare

Uneven Lanes is an ongoing, global photographic project that maps the intersections of personal genealogy, migration, and geographic memory. Born in 1963, Bernd Rainer Mayer embarks on a worldwide journey to document specific locations bound by familial ties. By traversing these personal terrains, the project explores how history embeds itself in landscapes and architecture.

Uneven Lanes is an ongoing, global photographic project that maps the intersections of personal genealogy, migration, and geographic memory. Born in 1963, Bernd Rainer Mayer embarks on a worldwide journey to document specific locations bound by familial ties. By traversing these personal terrains, the project explores how history embeds itself in landscapes and architecture. Whether capturing intimate portraits in the slums of Liberia and on a garbage site in Iraq, or shooting street portraits in Japan, the artist is equally moved by these encounters, finding a profound shared humanity both at the edges of society and in bustling modern streets.

The core of Uneven Lanes lies in its title: the paths we trod are rarely smooth, linear, or predictable. Rather than traditional travel or documentary photography, this work focuses on the emotional resonance of “the trace”—the quiet, lingering presence of the past in the present.

This artistic journey is curated by Prof. Michaela Köhler, a lifelong companion whose shared history with the artist dates back to the days before kindergarten. This profound, enduring connection directly shapes the artistic vision of the project, adding an intimate layer of mutual understanding to the exploration of memory and roots.

The photographs have been edited by Tommy Saalfrank of recom group, digitized and produced by Sven Schönauer and team of recom art care, and framed by Aran Leptig and Marius Posseik of blanko berlin. The silver-gelatine prints were produced by Christian Klant.

Ein Blick unter die Haube: eine technische Zeichnung von unserem DOM — unser portables Digitalisierungsstudio für Kunstwerke und Kulturerbe vor Ort. 75 einzeln steuerbare LEDs, eine 50-Megapixel-Kamera, kompakte Bauweise für den Einsatz direkt im Museum oder Archiv.
Kürzere Wege bedeuten weniger Belastung für das zu erhaltende Kulturerbe.
