ANDERE PORTRÄTS + 3D (1995)

Published for the 1995 Venice Biennale, Andere Porträts + 3D documents a pivotal moment in Thomas Ruff’s exploration of digital manipulation and the nature of photographic reality.
Moving away from his famous deadpan, passport-style Porträts, Ruff used a 1970s Minolta montage synthesiser, traditionally used by German police to generate composite suspect sketches, to layer faces of different individuals onto one another. The resulting composite portraits create uncanny, eerily believable individuals who do not actually exist. The volume also features his early 3D stereoscopic experiments, pushing the boundaries of spatial perception in two-dimensional photography.

REPUBLIC (2012)

A scarce monograph from one of the most transformative voices in modern avant-garde photography, Republic represents a foundational moment in the brief yet prolific career of the late Chinese photographer and poet Ren Hang, who died in 2017. Published in a hand numbered run of just 500 copies.

Shot entirely on analogue point-and-shoot cameras, Republic captures Ren Hang’s circle of friends in Beijing navigating vulnerability, intimacy, and subversion. Set against minimalist interiors, outdoor natural landscapes, and stark urban architecture, his nude subjects interlock into sculptural, surreal, and often humorous compositions that directly challenge societal taboos around bodily autonomy and sexuality in contemporary China.
